Happy 104th Birthday to the National Park Service! #weloveparks

On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the act creating the National Park Service, a new federal bureau in the Department of the Interior responsible for protecting the 35 national parks and monuments. Today, 104 years later, the National Park Service comprises 419 park sites covering more than 84 million acres in 50 states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, Saipan, and the Virgin Islands. These parks preserve our nation’s pristine scenery, natural wonders, cultural and historical monuments, places of deep meaning, and moments of great change.

Celebrate the National Park Service's birthday as entrance fees are waived on August 25! Find a park near you or explore virtual events hosted by parks across the country!

As we celebrate our 104th birthday, we are also recognizing the centennial of the 19th amendment, ratified on August 26, 1920, that strengthened the public position of women in American civic life, empowering them to be stronger advocates for the places that became part of the National Park System over the next 100 years. Maintenance Monday - Meet your irrigation team! These guys schedule 75 irrigation controllers, including 7 for ballfield lighting. They maintain 11,500 heads in 1140 zones located throughout the City of Hurst. This includes right-of-ways, median, parks, and landscape beds at City facilities. To compare, the average home has one controller, 4-6 zones, and 40-60 heads. Can we get a round of applause? #WeAreParksAndRec

I am so proud to work with this team of professionals who strive every day to do the right thing, make the right decisions. They work long hours, sometimes in extreme elements, to make sure our residents and guests have fun at our events, safe playgrounds for the kids, and quality programs for all ages. If you see them out maintaing the parks, at the front desk of the recreation center, or helping you over the phone, please tell them THANK YOU! They are some of the best around! ~ Kristie, Parks Director

Thank you for the extremely pleasant phone calls from staff today to be sure our kid's classes were canceled and refunded as appropriate.
