Getting some fire on the ground this spring to create more defensible space around the ranch. I was able to burn about 2 acres over the course of 3 days before the rain came in. Thanks to the Watershed Center fire program for all of the skills and knowledge that they have shared in our community. This unit was prepped for burning as part of the

Now is the time to fully embrace our humanity. We are nature beings. We are continually learning from these wise mystic teachers that surround us with their own vibrant existence, and from our own mistakes. I’ve been in the thick of it, bearing it all, and I’m still finding my way through the forest. For many years now so much time and energy is spent out of the garden, off the farm, away from tending our land, raising our children, or earning a living—on cannabis advocacy, on regenerative agriculture advocacy, on repairing the damage of the War on Drugs on our communities and watersheds, on badly needed policy reform, on shattering the stigma, and on continually having to defend ourselves as though we are criminals, perhaps ironically now trapped in a regulatory system that either by poor or purposeful design is in danger of destroying the small craft cannabis farmer of the legacy regions upon whose backs and whose reputation this industry was built. I take heart daily in the lessons nature teaches and in the good people out there working their asses off to help patients access medicine, to help those incarcerated for using plant medicine get out of prison, to help free the plant in all localities, and to help small artisanal farm families like ours get through the many severe barriers to entry into the licensed cannabis industry and keep on keeping on. Thank you. I am so grateful every day to be on this journey together. A lot of battles fought together and many more ahead. I’m proud of the garden we are growing this year. I’m proud of what we have done to regenerate this land and the course of our lives, our entire way of life. No matter what happens next. And this year, it feels so damn poignant and precious that we have fought so hard and stood for what we believe in and continue to refuse to back down or negotiate our values. Doing the right thing isn’t hard, it’s facing all the backlash for having ethics that takes some courage and often, sacrifice. So worth it. Blood and sweat. F**k the tears. @ Hyampom, California

This week we will be dedicating our feed to honoring and highlighting Black farmers making a difference in their communities. May they inspire all of us to have the courage to DO WHATEVER IT TAKES to change this reality.
While there are truly no words for the most recent or the centuries of heinous atrocities committed against our Black brothers and sisters over the last half millennium, as a farmer,, this single fact saddens and disheartens me as much as the horrific acts of violence disgust, shame, horrify and enrage me—to my very core. The world was far more progressive in 1900, for the small farmer, for the Black farmer. How can this be?!, we ask. Because we have allowed it to happen. Because we are all complicit in putting convenience and our own accrual of wealth first. Until we make very drastic changes in the way we live every aspect of our lives, the hidden masters, the great oppressors, will continue to have us at their feet, groveling, dependent on them to feed us. Except for they don’t nourish us. They destroy us. With systemic racism, with mass manipulation of our food, health, education and justice systems, with Industrial Agriculture, with our reckless consumption of endless goods made by slaves over seas, with the blood of the earth, shipped across the globe to us, with the blood of the earth, for our mere convenience, they/we are bringing about our societal demise, and soon, only I fear not until it gets far worse, they will once again claim to save us from the chaos, with their global agenda to control not only our society, but each and every one of our cells in our bodies, thoughts in our minds, and ultimately the choices we make, the actions we take. Societally if we wish to heal the diseases plaguing us, including racism and social injustice, if we want to free human society as a whole, we have to change. We have to change a lot. And we have to do it Now. Any longer will be too late. For the Human Race. For all Life on Earth. This is a pivotal time. We are either going to make it or break it. Do not be fooled. Think. Have Courage. Brace yourself and DO Whatever it Takes.

Thankfully, the only thing we’ve caught around here is some serious . We were getting pretty worried that it hadn’t hit us yet when it suddenly smacked us super hard in the face like, WTF are you doing for f**k’s sake go plant something. Happy to say we have apparently mastered the art of laziness, and it has been rewarded. Our livestock did all the grunt work this spring, pooping a beautiful pile of manure for us to layer on the garden beds and rotating through the gardens doing a masterful job of chowing down the cover crop; we did chop and drop the last bits prior to planting, but left a little to reseed so we can continue to be lazy in the future. (Why not let nature do most of the heavy lifting?)... is king here and in our is the end game. @ Playing In The Dirt
