When County Executive Sara Innamorato’s team released their theoretical study on the paid leave mandate, it promised sunshine and economic rainbows. But then again, it’s remarkably easy to get a study to skew your way when you hand it off to a political ally and fellow member of your own political circle.

Maybe—just maybe—the County and the Executive should have sat down with the PA Chamber or talked to actual local business owners directly before railroading this policy through.

Instead, the PA Chamber had to conduct the real survey themselves. The result from nearly 400 Allegheny County business owners? 83% say this mandate will directly hit their bottom line, leading straight to inflated consumer prices, hiring freezes, and job cuts.

It is easy to vote for feel-good mandates when you're spending tax dollars from a government office. But when 8 out of 10 local employers who actually fund our tax base tell you a policy will damage the regional economy, ignoring them isn't "progress"—it's a deliberate choice to drive jobs out of Allegheny County.

Real problems. Real families. Real solutions.

The numbers tell a concerning story for Pennsylvania's 17th Congressional District. From families struggling with poverty and housing costs to residents without health insurance and the devastating impact of drug overdoses, these are real challenges affecting our communities.

Tony Guy has made economic opportunity, public safety, and combating fentanyl trafficking central priorities of his campaign.

Our communities deserve serious conversations about these issues and meaningful solutions for the future.

Absolutely important to understand the Dems underhandedly passed this “law” that will drive businesses from Allegheny county

Statement from Brian Weismantle
Chairman, Republican Committee of Allegheny County

Allegheny County Council’s approval of a mandatory twelve-week paid parental leave requirement for employers with fifteen or more employees represents a significant and concerning burden on the business community of this region.

While the desire to support families and enable parents to care for their children is universally shared, the manner in which this policy has been structured is unsustainable. By placing the entire financial responsibility for up to twelve weeks of fully paid leave solely upon employers, without a shared funding mechanism, insurance framework, or adequate consideration of operational realities, this mandate imposes substantial costs that many businesses will struggle to absorb.

Local employers already operate under considerable economic pressure. The addition of this obligation risks reduced hiring, delayed expansion, job losses, and increased costs passed on to consumers. Such outcomes would ultimately harm the very workers and families the policy seeks to assist.

I respectfully urge Allegheny County leadership to reconsider this approach and to examine more balanced alternatives that provide meaningful support for families while remaining viable for the employers who sustain our local economy. Thoughtful policy must account for both compassion and practicality.
