SEVEN CANDIDATES TO RUN FOR FOUR CANEY CITY COUNCIL SEATS IN NOVEMBER GENERAL ELECTION

CANEY — Seven candidates will be on the Caney City Council ballot for the Nov. 3 general election.

Noon Monday was the deadline or candidates to officially file for local, county, state and federal offices. No primary election will be needed for the Caney City Council seats; the four available seats will be decided at the Nov. 3 general election.

On the ballot are the following seven candidates:

• Debora Wood, 109 S. Main,

• Elizabeth Burch, 208 S. Spring,

• Becky J. Dye,

• Jeff Culver, 501 N. Bradley,

• Jesse Hilyard, 202 N. Wood,

• Bart Gulick, 100 S. East, and

• Justin Lyons, 101 E. 6th.

MISSOURI MAN KILLED IN MOTORCYCLE WRECK NEAR U.S. 400-169 INTERSECTION ON SATURDAY MORNING

CHERRYVALE — A Missouri man was killed in one-vehicle wreck east of the U.S. 400/169 junction in northwestern Labette County on Saturday morning.

The Kansas Highway Patrol has identified the victim as Lynn Carl Hinkle, age 69, of Walnut Shade, Mo.

The KHP’s preliminary crash report says Hinkle was traveling westbound on U.S. 400 near and was approaching the intersection of U.S. 169 before 7:30 a.m., when his 2005 Harley Davidson suddenly left the roadway to the south for an unknown reason. The motorcycle overturned in a south ditch.

He was taken to Labette Health but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The preliminary crash report also says Hinkle was not wearing a helmet at the time of the wreck.

STATE TRACK MEET UPDATE:

Caney Valley senior Simeon Sanchez has two medals around his neck at the Class 3A Track and Field Championship in Wichita.

Sanchez was a silver medalist in the boys’ 1600 meter run with a finish time of 4:14.40, which was a new personal record.

He also picked up third place in the 3200 meter run with a new personal record tine of 9:24.12.

STATE TRACK MEET UPDATE: Cherryvale's Addyson Boss places seventh in class 3A girls' discus.

Cherryvale’s Addyson Boss picked up two points for the Charger scorecard at the Class 3A Track and Field Championship in Wichita by placing seventh in the girls’ discus event.

Her best throw at the state event was 118 feet. 9 inches.

REVIEW OF STATE GOLF MEETS: ETHAN SMALL IS RUNNER-UP AT CLASS 4A MEET WHILE MASON LAWRENCE FINISHES IN 31ST PLACE; CANEY VALLEY'S LAYNE DENNY CLAIMS 20TH PLACE AT CLASS 3A STATE TOURNAMENT

It was a big week at state golf tournaments for local high school duffers.

At the class 4A state golf tournament in Hesston, Independence senior Ethan Small ended his prep career in dramatic fashion, finishing as runner-up on a playoff hole with Regan Kueker of Wamego.

In the second day of the tournament, Small hit a tournament low 66 to finish -5. That tied Kueker for first place. The twosome then were forced into the playoff hole, which was won by the Wamego golfer.

Small, who has committed to Missouri Southern State University, ends his career as the state champion during his junior year and as runner-up in his senior campaign.

Independence senior Mason Lawrence also advanced to Day 2 of the state meet and finished in a tie for 31st.

At the class 3A state meet in Topeka, Caney Valley junior Layne Denny finished in 20th place overall.

DISCUS THROW NOT COOPER SMITH'S USUAL EVENT BUT GIVES CHERRYVALE SENIOR A FOURTH-PLACE FINISH AT STATE MEET; FINISHES IN SIXTH PLACE IN SHOT PUT

Cherryvale High School senior Cooper Smith ended his high school track and field career with a pair of medals from the Class 3A State Track and Field Championship in Wichita.

In the event by which he was best known, Smith captured sixth place in the shot put throw.

However . . .

In only the second time he ever competed in the discus throw, Smith earned a fourth place medal. Smith got a personal record of 164 feet, 4 inches en route to finding his way to the fourth step at the medal podium.

It was only the second time he competed in discus, having tried it at the class 3A regional track and field meet the pervious week (and finishing in third place, which qualified him for the state meet).

Cherryvale’s Addy Boss will compete in the girls’ discus throw at the state track and field championship on Saturday.
