Our offices are closed today to honor the many military men and women who sacrificed so that we may be free. There are several moving tributes to the fallen service members being honored in Independence, Missouri, today.

Memorial Day 2026 Schedule of Events
7 AM – 4 PM: Veterans flag lookup assistance at Woodlawn Cemetery (1,500 flags placed by Scouts).

11:00 AM: Concert of Remembrance featuring The Spirit of Independence Concert Band at the Uptown Market.

1:00 PM: American Legion Band performance at the Truman Library & Museum (Free admission today courtesy of the Royals Foundation).

2:00 PM: Memorial Day Howitzer Firing Demonstration at the Truman Library & Museum.

The L.E.A.D. program is a 9-month professional development course featuring monthly sessions that expose emerging leaders to civic issues, community resources, and key leaders. The graduation luncheon marked the culmination of their hard work and project completion.

The new Independence Municipal Commons officially opened on May 14, 2026, to serve as a centralized hub for city services. The four-story building, located at 20201 E. Jackson Drive, brings multiple city departments under one roof to improve efficiency and make it easier for residents to conduct city business.

Key Features and Future Plans
✅ Consolidated Services: The facility houses community development, parks and recreation, the city clerk's office, city council chambers, and utility center operations.

✅ Site Redevelopment: With the opening of the new commons, demolition of the old City Hall building near the Independence Square is underway to make room for a future Mid-Continent Public Library headquarters.

✅ Economic Impact: City staff noted that the new facility has sparked approximately $5.6 million in new private investment along the Jackson Drive corridor.
