Today, during our Souls to the Polls event in East Chicago, our Executive Director and Kevin Mejia, a supporter of our cause, were confronted at a polling location while voting.
A poll worker was wearing a shirt supporting a political figure known for hateful and racist rhetoric. Many people present believed this was inappropriate for someone serving at a polling place. Our Executive Director calmly asked to speak with a poll inspector. None was available.
Instead, a voter began yelling at our Executive Director, filmed the exchange at close range without consent, and then threatened those present, saying, "We can take this outside. Y'all are scared and won't come outside."
We condemn these actions in the strongest terms. Intimidation and threats have no place in our politics, our society, or our polling places. Voters should be able to cast their ballots free from fear, and poll workers should serve with neutrality and professionalism.
Polling places belong to the people. They exist so every voter can make their voice heard by choosing the candidates they support. We will not be deterred, and we will keep standing up for every voter's right to participate safely.
We also want to thank Kevin Mejia for standing with us today. He is one of the hardest-working people we know and a true community leader. We are grateful for his support and for his steady presence in moments like this.
