We’re proud to see Indiana Freedom to Read Committee Co-Chair, Emily Bedwell, featured by the ACLU of Indiana in a powerful look at the long history of book bans and the communities most often affected by censorship.

Emily reminds us of an important distinction: parents have every right to make reading decisions for their own children, but those individual choices should not determine what every young person is allowed to access.

🛸 The "Censor Ship" is getting closer! 👽

We're continuing to power up with knowledge, this time by taking a look at the second most challenged book of 2025: "The Perks of Being A Wallflower" by Steven Chbosky. This book was reported as challenged 33 times, according to the American Library Association.

📚The Perks of Being a Wallflower's Book Resume:
A coming of age novel about Charlie, a freshman in high school who is a wallflower, shy and introspective, and very intelligent. He deals with the usual teen problems, but also with the su***de of his best friend.

You can read a selection from this book, or a variety of others, at the Banned Books Read-In on Saturday, October 10. It's in conjunction with Indiana Freedom to Read!

Did you get yesterday's question right? If you said 1982, you'd be correct! Let's see how well you do on today's bit of trivia: how many challenges to Patricia McCormick's "Sold" were reported in 2025? Answer to be revealed in tomorrow's post! 👀
