🚨 Shelter Relocation Update - Friday, Aug. 21

The Red Cross shelter previously located at the YWCA in Gary has moved to the Hudson Campbell Sports & Fitness Center, 455 Massachusetts Street, Gary, Indiana.

“In my 48 years of living here, I have never experienced a flood,” said Joe, a Hamilton County resident.

Joe, who lives along the White River, told us that it was early Saturday morning when he awoke to find water up to his knees inside his home in Fishers. He was rescued by the local fire department by boat.

Red Cross Damage Assessment volunteers Cat and Quentin were on the ground today in Joe’s neighborhood, documenting the damage left behind by the flooding.

“People really need our help. We contribute in every way possible to make sure people get the help they need,” said Cat, a Red Cross volunteer.

Our teams have been assessing damage across communities impacted by the recent storms. They typically spend 8 to 10 hours a day surveying damage in affected areas.

After flooding impacted the Greater Indianapolis area, Ismael and his nine-month pregnant wife, Maritzabel, came to the Washington Township Service Center to learn more about resources and services. As a Red Cross volunteer gathered information about the family, Ismael shared how their lives unfolded within the last few days.

“I was at work in Pittsburg, Indiana, and I told my boss that I needed to leave to check on my family and house,” said Ismael.

By the time he arrived to his home in the Ravenswood, Ismael says the White River was near the front door. He began closing the areas around the crawlspace to prevent water from getting into their utilities. When the floodwaters rose four to five inches inside the crawlspace, Ismael decided to shut off the electricity and evacuate Maritzabel and their children ages, two and five, before access in and out of the neighborhood was longer available.

“We are expecting a baby girl in three weeks,” they said.

Ismael and his family were planning to temporarily stay with friends, and said they would head back soon to assess the damage before deciding if the family can return home.

More than 200 Red Cross disaster responders continue to provide support to affected communities more than a week after severe weather, including tornadoes, heavy rain and flooding first impacted the Indiana Region.

The Red Cross is currently operating five shelters in Delaware, Franklin, Lake, Marion and Wayne counties and we are supporting six partner-run shelters in several communities. Since storms began, we have provided more than 1,250 overnight stays and distributed nearly 11,000 meals and snacks.

On Tuesday, City of Indianapolis - Government Mayor Joe Hogsett visited the Red Cross shelter at the Washington Township Service Center. During his visit, he connected with community members who have been displaced by flooding and saw the impact of the Red Cross mission firsthand.

The Red Cross continues to work closely with local officials and partners to provide support, comfort and care to individuals and families.

After rising floodwaters filled their home near the White River in Indianapolis, the Chandler family and some of their neighbors were rescued by boat and brought to the Red Cross shelter at the Washington Township Service Center and School.

Eddie Chandler and his grandmother, Ramona, say they began receiving warnings of rising water on Friday around 3:00 p.m. As they watched the water levels increase, Eddie, other nearby family members and neighbors began moving their vehicles to higher ground. Eventually, some trees fell onto their next-door neighbor’s home cutting off electricity to several houses. Eddie says he quickly realized that help was needed, and within a few short hours the water went from his ankles to his chin. They could no longer escape by car, and he says Ramona has several medical needs. Thankfully, they were rescued by boat and brought to safety at the Red Cross shelter.

Upon arrival at the Shelter, Ramona received a medical cot and a place to plug in her oxygen tank. They also found other family members at the shelter. Ramona expressed gratitude to the American Red Cross and its volunteers.

“They are so friendly. Everyone doted on us and gave us what we needed,” said Ramona.

Eddie was pleased with how the American Red Cross helped his grandmother and stepdad.

“They make us feel comfortable and understand our medical conditions. Our house is destroyed. We don’t know when or if we can go back," said Eddie.

Our hearts are with those who have been affected by recent severe weather, tornadoes and flooding. The Indiana Red Cross continues to support communities, provide safe shelter, distribute meals and snacks and offer comfort and care to those impacted.

In the coming days, follow tips to stay safe:
• Be prepared to evacuate immediately if local officials advise.
• Turn around, don't drown. Never swim, walk or drive through floodwaters.
• Follow evacuation routes and don't try to take shortcuts because they may be blocked.
• If you need to leave your home, think about where you’ll go, how you’ll get there, where you’ll stay and what you’ll take with you. Don’t forget to include pets in your plans.

About 60 Red Cross disaster responders are working around the clock to provide safe shelter, warm meals and comfort and care to those affected by recent severe weather across the Indiana Region.

More than 150 people have stayed overnight in Red Cross and partner-run shelters, and alongside community partners we have served more than 900 meals to those affected. Our team continues to work closely with local officials, partners and organizations to provide support during this evolving disaster response.

Thousands remain without power since outages first began on Monday across the Indiana Region. To ensure the safety of your food, you should use a thermometer to measure the temperature of your freezer and refrigerator. Food that has been warmer than 40 degrees Fahrenheit should be thrown out.

An unopened refrigerator will keep foods cold for about 4 hours. A full freezer will keep the temperature for about 48 hours if the door remains closed, and a half-full freezer will keep the temperature for 24 hours.
