Memory 4: The Graduate

While print media will never be as big as it once was, there will always be a need for it. This is especially true on college campuses like IUPUI. After a failed partnership with a group who no longer prints, GPSG decided to fill that need with The Graduate at IUPUI, and make sure graduate/professional students are represented. Many thought we would be unable to accomplish this task, but after school year of printing, I think we accomplished what could be expected for the first year and then some. Now IUPUI's only in-print student run paper on campus, the Graduate fills a need on campus and has the business model to be sustainable. Still a young endeavor, what excites me about the Graduate is where it will go in the coming years. I have to give special thanks to Maria Lesch, Bindu Podila, and Sarah Harlan for really making the Graduate what it is today!

Memory 3: Polar Plunge

Since 2013 I have led teams of student government leaders into the icy Eagle Creek Reservoir in early March to raise money for the Special Olympics of Central Indiana. Over the past four plunges, these teams have raised a total of $4,835. I'll always be proud of the commitment of the student government leaders who participated in this as it takes a certain type of person to do so. Thank you to everyone who took the plunge and was "Freezin' for a Reason".

Memory 2: Elite 50

Since 2001, the Top 100 Dinner has been one of the largest and most prestigious IUPUI campus traditions, but was only open to undergraduates. This was an opportunity and experience I knew graduate and professional students wanted, and I wanted to make it happen. The first Elite 50 almost didn’t happen though. After securing funding for the first dinner, and drafting the framework, the assignment was given to a new GPSG committee to work on. Unfortunately, by late November of 2014 nothing had happened. It was at that time that I made a commitment to GPSG that I would personally lead this charge to start planning and execute the award and dinner process all in about 4 months. I was in charge of making everything from the application to the logo. Many thought I was crazy for trying, and they were probably a little right, but we made it happen. With over 100 applicants and 170 people in attendance for the first dinner, we executed a great program. Our next step was to garner feedback, secure funding, and execute another great dinner. Well, with about a week left until the second-annual Elite 50 Celebration Dinner, I can confidently say we did just that. Not only have we executed a great application process thus far, but we had an Elite 50 Reception at the Chancellor’s House just like Top 100. There are far fewer opportunities to go to the Chancellor’s House for graduate and professional students than there are for undergraduate students, making this an incredibly unique opportunity.

What I will probably remember most about the Elite 50 is how it fostered a sense of community. Too often, graduate and professional students don’t meet with or interact with people outside of their program or school. Except for commencement there is rarely a more academically diverse room of graduate and professional students than Elite 50. I’m honored to have been able to have made something like the Elite 50 happen.

Memory 1: Jagathon

In GPSG at IUPUI I have been honored to foster a great relationship with Jagathon: IUPUI's Dance Marathon. I won IUPUI's first-ever Dancing with the Stars with Misty Smith in 2013 which raised money to benefit Jagathon. That November, GPSG would make the final donation to get Jagathon to their $50,000 goal. After judging the second-annual Dancing with the stars in 2014, GPSG would go on to make the final donation again at the next Jagathon to clinch the $100,000 goal. In 2016, GPSG stepped it up with a program I helped establish where we would collect donations at food-service locations at IUPUI. Between that program and participating in the Celebration of miracles, GPSG helped raise over $10,000. With the success of bucket program, GPSG has been given the green light by food services to make this an annual activity. In doing so, GPSG has already raised several hundered dollars for the 2017 Jagathon!

Starting tomorrow I will be sharing some of my favorite memories from the past 4 years of being a student body president. Entering my last month as a student body president, I thought it my fitting to share some of the memories we have made together. I wouldn't be where I am today, and not a day goes by that I forget that. So I say we, because with your support, together we have made been able to do some incredible things.
