As families begin navigating involvement with the foster care system, many quickly encounter a system that is both complex and emotionally demanding. Processes can feel overwhelming, timelines uncertain, and expectations difficult to interpret—especially those new to the experience.
For Skye and Levi, that reality became clear early on. What also became clear, however, was the impact of having a consistent, compassionate support system during that process.
Three Firefly staff members on their support team stood out in their foster care experience: Ghislene, Holly, and Jill.
According to the Smiths, each demonstrated a level of responsiveness and care that helped reduce confusion and build trust at critical moments. Communication was timely. Questions were answered thoroughly. Just as importantly, there was a consistent effort to check in—not only on logistics, but on how the family was doing overall.
“We’re learning quickly that if we’re going to be part of a ‘village’ for a child, we also need a strong village around us,” Skye explained, “and these women have been exactly that.”
In this case, that support came through individuals who combined professional responsibility with genuine care—something the Smiths say helped them feel seen and supported in a sometimes-daunting system.
“Thank you for the care your team provides and for the people you’ve entrusted to walk alongside families like ours."
