Pig spit carry of a downed firefighter: An easy way to remove a firefighter with 2 people, with the tools you have on you is the pig spit method. You must pacakge the firefighter prior to putting the hook through the straps. This means buckling the waist strap in between the legs, as to not allow the pack to pull off the firefighter. Quick, easy, and another trick for your toolbox of knowledge.

STARS, PLATES and RODS:
Many often only see the exterior plates or stars and know they identify a concern with the structural integrity of the building. In the enclosed pictures we took in Jersey City, the exterior ornamental star and rod can extend just inside the bearing wall to a fixed plate, (see picture) or it can extend further throughout the floor space via a rod and spreader to another bearing wall within or on the opposite side of the structure.( see picture) The latter is concerning simply because if the rod and spreader are exposed to temperatures as low as 800 degrees, they can fail.

Make no doubt about it, firefighters must be strong, agile, and ready to “push, pull, lift, carry, and drag” heavy hose on the fireground.

Inevitably, when a report is given over the radio, you’ll hear a lot of “umm’s and ahh’s” or “at this time’s” coming out of their mouth. Why? Because they aren’t exactly sure what else to say but don’t want to put the mic down and sound like they forgot to say something. Think before you speak, because once you say it, you can’t delete it.

Brotherhood of Fire

After seeing a recent post about how much added weight firefighters are required to carry this firefighter Adam Westfield was curious to see EXACTLY how much weight is added to himself when carrying the typical things he (and other firefighters) take when going to different jobs.

1 Just bunker gear.
2. Gear and airpack.
3 Airpack with hook & can. (what the Firefighter in Adam's position will take into 90% of alarms)
4.And finally high rise load, kit and irons.

Hopefully this helps put things in perspective as far as how much training, conditioning and mental toughness is required to do this work.

Thanks Adam for the lesson... you help make the #BrotherhoodStrong

Stream movement and stream angle have a major impact on fire attack and getting water to the seat of the fire. Click to request more info, demos & training: https://firedept.link/Episode45. Angling the stream at the ceiling will cool fire gases, but then it will typically follow the ceiling until it hits the back wall. In this episode Ray McCormack discusses water mapping using smooth bore nozzle stream and how the water will travel through the room based on your technique.
