Join Bethany Grabe on Saturday, July 11th at 9am in Buxton Park for Yoga in the Park

Bethany Grabe is with Begin Again Yoga

Bethany combines yoga postures, breath work, and mindfulness into a complete package for therapeutic classes. She first started practicing yoga to help alleviate the side effects of stress and anxiety. The journey has brought her to share those same healing experiences as a 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher to those who would like to live a more enjoyable life and have better general wellness. Bethany leads her mixed-level community classes by directly reflecting what she has experienced throughout her journey – healing and feeling – with a goal of others experiencing the same benefits of yoga on the mind, body, and spirit. As a new resident of Indianola, she is excited to be part of the Yoga in the Park program this summer and to meet others in the community.

So what’s the green tape around some street, park and trail trees mean?

We have systematically removed all Ash trees in the parks over numerous years. This allowed us to prepare for Emerald Ash Borer and also allowed us to replace the trees incrementally through a number of years.

Emerald Ash Borer was not here when we started, but it is now. We planned ahead as we had seen how it affected other cities in other states as it made its way towards Iowa.

Last year we removed the worst Ash trees in the parking around the city. Last fall the Ash trees that are left all appeared healthy. This year they are not. The wood becomes very brittle as they die and we cannot risk leaving them till they are completely dead. Therefore all the Ash trees in parking will be removed. Some may appear ok, but if you look closer you will likely see signs of decline.

The pictures are all of trees that appeared healthy in October.

Things to notice:
1. Dead branches (obvious :))
2. Sprouting around the crown and thinner at top
3. Flaking or scraping off bark up top and along the trunk
4. D shaped holes in trunk
5. Increase in woodpecker population

* If there is one in your yard you can look into treatment for the tree or removal.
