The Iota Police Department will be conducting training at The Iota High School today. Please do not be alarmed by the activity.

01/23/2020

The Iota Police Department would like to thank the many concerned citizens that reached out to us regarding the recent series of threats. Chief Daigle and his Officers are positive that the teenagers, faculty, and children of our schools are perfectly safe. The investigation is under control, and we will update the community when the party responsible is brought to justice.

These attempts to strike fear into the good citizens of our town were made in desperation and anger, but without teeth. Having a determined Police Department make plans for your future is a terrifying prospect, and one that this unfortunate soul should have considered before this careless series of bad decisions. The Officers in this town do not take offenses against our children lightly, and will ensure that this taste will not linger in our mouths for long.

The Iota Police Department has been made aware of new threats relayed via social media, and are currently involved in a joint investigation with The Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office and the Louisiana State Police. In cooperation with the Acadia Parish School Board, a decision was made to close all Iota Schools for tomorrow, January 23rd.

Among the threatening communications, a photograph of a firearm was posted. Chief Daigle assures the public that this was in fact a stock photo downloaded from the internet, for the intent of causing mass panic.

We will continue to investigate the matter, until we are able to hold the involved parties responsible.

PRESS RELEASE:

On September 24, 2019 Chief Daigle responded to a complaint at Iota High School that one of their students had received a death threat the night before while at home. The faculty and the parents were expressing concern for their child’s safety while at school. During the investigation, it was determined there was no credible threat to the student.
It was determined the threat was made by a non-student from Eunice. Iota Police Department is working closely with Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office and Eunice Police Department to resolve the initial complaint.
During the investigation numerous students began spreading rumors around campus via social media app such as Instagram and Snap Chat that there was a weapon on school grounds. At no time was there ever a weapon on school grounds.
Chief Daigle would like to reiterate his objection for allowing cell phones in school for this very reason. The problems such as the spreading of rumors and misinformation cause more trouble for law enforcement, then the perceived benefits. Chief Daigle urges parents to speak to their children and encourage them not to use their phones while in school except for an emergency.
