If you’ve spotted the YL-37 helicopter circling Ames today, you’ll have a chance to see it up close tomorrow at the Ames Municipal Airport during The Boys & Girls Clubs of Story County Fly-In event.

The helicopter served in Vietnam from 1965–1968 and came under fire during numerous missions. Today, it continues its mission as a flying, hands-on educational experience, giving visitors a unique opportunity to connect with history.

The Apgar Water Plaza has come a LONG way since I attended the groundbreaking in the rain last April. Lots of happy kids at the opening! I love opportunities like this to get kids and families outside enjoying their community together.

Congratulations and thank you to all who made this dream a reality!

Vote Tuesday!

Tomorrow is primary election day in Iowa, and Marshall County voters who are members of one of the major political parties – Democratic or Republican – will have plenty of choices on their ballots.

Marshall County Auditor/Recorder Nan Benson said even though polls close at 8 p.m. tomorrow, the people who are still in line at polling locations will be able to cast their ballots. People who show up after the closing will not be able to vote.

The county election workers will bring the results from each of the 11 polling locations to the Marshall County Election Center.

Public input is a critical piece of everything we do at the Capitol. Rep. Heather Matson and I hosted a group of current and future Iowa psychiatrists for discussion and a mock subcommittee meeting. Hands on learning is a great way to drive home the importance of advocacy.

The Mother’s Market was a beautiful success, and Skylar and I loved every minute.

Here’s how Guiding Star Marshalltown summarized:

Wondering what the outcome of this year’s Mother’s Market and In Honor of a Mother was?

A success! 🎉

Together, we raised $6,854.30, welcomed 120 attendees, featured 17 vendors, honored 40 mothers, and were supported by 7 sponsors.

We think this year was our most special market yet. We were overjoyed to see a full house of people, and received many comments about the cheerful atmosphere. There were not only high-quality goods, but high-quality people! Everywhere you went there were smiles, laughs and good conversations.

This was never meant to be a typical shopping experience. The vision was to bring women together, sharing their talents and their presence, to support the future of women’s healthcare and support for women and children in Marshalltown.

That was fully accomplished this year.

We are grateful to everyone who showed up and made it possible. We can’t thank you enough, and we hope to see you again next year!

We have talked a lot about cancer this year in Iowa, and rightly so.

While Iowa’s pediatric cancer rate is not higher than the rest of the country, every story of a kid with cancer is heart-wrenching.

Our state cancer investments so far have focused on adults. Until now.

Yesterday at the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children's Hospital, Governor Reynolds signed SF 2480 into law, creating a $3 million recurring annual investment in pediatric cancer research and treatment funded by a tax on ni****ne pouches and v**es.

I was honored to floor manage the bill and to speak at the celebration. Thank you to all the pediatric cancer families who shared your stories again and again and made this possible!

It was an awesome celebration!!!
