Iowa City Councilor Andrew Dunn Announces Resignation Effective January 1, 2025

IOWA CITY, IA – Today, Iowa City Councilor Andrew Dunn announced his resignation from the City Council, effective January 1, 2025. After serving two years on the council, Dunn expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the community and work alongside colleagues to create a stronger, more resilient community.

“It has been an honor to serve the people of Iowa City and to work toward a vision of a community that exemplifies our progressive values of inclusivity, sustainability, and genuine care for one another,” said Councilor Dunn. “I am proud of the progress we have made together and am confident the council will continue to build upon these achievements.”

Dunn described the reason for his departure, “Over the last few months, my professional obligations within the labor movement have increased significantly. Heading into 2025, I expect these obligations and associated travel out of town to increase. I want to ensure that Iowa Citians get the representation they deserve.”

During his tenure, Councilor Dunn reports he is most proud of the Iowa City’s progress on making Iowa City a better place for working families by investing in affordable housing, underestimated businesses, and by creation of Iowa City Fare Free public transit.

Dunn added, “Although I am stepping down from this role, my commitment to Iowa City and its residents remains unwavering. I look forward to witnessing the continued success of our community and supporting its progress in any way I can.”

The City Council will work with city officials to address the process for filling the vacancy created by Councilor Dunn's departure. Dunn represents Iowa City District C.

Iowa City unequivocally rejects this vile hatred in our community. These types of incidents are designed to intimidate and instill fear in our community. We must utilize incidents like these to strengthen our resolve and to continue, as a community, to fight, reject, and destroy white supremacy in America.

Some Northside residents were greeted by an old copy of Little Village magazine this week, wrapped up by a neo-Nazi group sticker.

Learn more about my effort to reform our city elections to be more accessible, representative, and democratic! Community feedback requested!

Andrew Dunn, former at-large and future District C councilor, has expressed a strong interest in changing the way the election system for the Iowa City City Council works. Dunn wrote in a Nov. 14 letter to the editor published in The Daily Iowan that he would like to change the “broken” election...

“Our community needs an election system that promotes justice, equity, and democratic representation. The current system fails to achieve this. Everybody deserves a seat at the table. These changes will create a more representative and resilient city council that we all deserve.”

Confusion has long been a staple of Iowa City’s local elections. The Iowa City Council has two types of councilors, all elected to four-year terms. First, we have four at-large councilors that the entire city elects. Our four at-large councilors have no restrictions on where they can live in the c...

Iowa City issues statement denouncing hate speech during Oct. 17 Council meeting

“As the Iowa City Council convened on Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2023, for their regular formal session, and opened to provide public comment from those who wished to speak about items not on the agenda, a handful of callers entered the forum remotely to spread their hate, fear, and ignorance.

Because Iowa City leadership understands that free speech is a constitutional right, these callers were each given their due three minutes for expression. Despite their brazen and vile commentary, our community should know that our City stands firm in denouncing this hateful and ignorant rhetoric and condemns these actions and words that intend to degrade and divide.

We are a progressive and caring community, based on the values of racial equity, social justice, and human rights, and we will continue to stand tall and proud as a beacon of hope and support for all who call Iowa City home. We will also continue to ensure our commitment to these values and ideals, and we will only be strengthened when challenged by those filled with ignorance and hate. Our foundation is strong and will not be shaken by the weak of mind and spirit. We ask all of our residents to stand together, remain strong, and support each other in our steadfast unity.”
