Here’s your good news for the day!

The Student Build Program completed yet another home this month on Sandusky Drive. Featuring high school students from the Iowa City Community School District and professional mentors, the program teaches students the art and craftsmanship needed to construct a home.

The ribbon cutting and open house for the latest project was held on June 5, 2026, but there’s much more to the house than meets the eye.

Not only is the home a new addition to The Housing Fellowship’s selection of rental properties for low-income families, but it was also made with energy conservation in mind. The house these students built is so energy-efficient, it’s expected to save occupants over $3,000 in yearly energy costs. This was made possible by funding made available from the City’s Climate Action Office.
