They shot, they moved, they’re tired. Day Three is (almost) done!

It’s been a long day, but the #BestSniper competitors fought hard.

As it stands, the top five teams are: U.S Coast Guard, 19th Special Forces Group, Colorado National Guard, Special Forces Sniper Course and 3-75 Ranger Regiment.

Oh the mess deck, a wonderful place with hamsters, memories, and coffee so thick you could patch the nonskid. If you would like to learn why no CS would ever allow a cover on the table, or what a WQSB is? Call RO Dallas today

#DYK The term mess deck originates from the Latin word missus, meaning a portion of food or a course at dinner.

Over time it was used to refer to a group of people who ate their meals together, personnel assisting the cooks and the area or facility where the crew ate. The formal establishment of the mess deck also eliminated the need for enlisted crew members to pay for their meals.

The mess deck is where crew members gather to eat their meals, rest, socialize, hold meetings and conduct training. During an emergency, it can also be used as a secondary or tertiary sickbay for injured and wounded personnel. #CoastGuardlife

This week, Chief Boatswains Mate Kraft demonstrated what leadership looks like. Part of being a leader is understanding the importance of the people that support the missions. Chief Kraft personally thanked multiple members of the Dallas MEPs, giving them a challenge coin.

Anyone who has ever served, probably remembers MEPs, and believe it or not, MEPs is actually full of caring men and women who ensure future military service members are qualified. We at RO Dallas are grateful for the MEPS personnel that work diligently to ensure new members of each branch are safely processed and shipped to their respective military training during this monumental year. U.S. Coast Guard Atlantic Area Command

Filmed at RO Dallas, check out this great piece that highlights an important part of the Coast Guard’s story.

In this documentary series, we spoke with Vincent Van Ness, a lieutenant junior grade at the time Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron (HITRON) was stood up. Van Ness is a HITRON-10 member and recognized for his role in evaluating night vision goggles and applying them to the unit's proof of concept and mission. He later retired as a lieutenant commander.

HITRON operations started as an experiment in 1998 to halt the flow of illegal drugs into the U.S. Drug trafficking organizations primarily used "go-fast" boats, high-speed smuggling vessels capable of traveling over twice the speed of Coast Guard cutters. The Coast Guard needed a way to counter the threat.

In late 1998, six Coast Guard pilots and four enlisted aircrew members developed tactics and procedures to utilize armed helicopters operating aboard Coast Guard cutters to answer the call.

HITRON helicopters operate in known smuggling vectors and rely on expertly trained aircrews and precision marksmen to disable go-fast drug smuggling vessels in the event suspects refuse to comply with verbal and visual warnings for law enforcement boardings under international maritime law. This series focuses on the founding members, pioneers, and stakeholders who have played an essential part in HITRON's history.

Admiral Karl Schultz

This year is the 100th Anniversary of the establishment of the Chief Petty Officer. As we come to the end of 2020, I would like to highlight some of the great Chiefs serving today and share some of their stories and insights.

"During the Don't Ask, Don't Tell era, I struggled daily with choosing the Coast Guard or sharing my life with someone I love. I served eight years under that policy, if anyone even suspected, that was all that was needed for a discharge. Now that it has been repealed, I get to be the leader I always wanted to be. I am a Chief, Machinery Technician, Alaska Native, female, and part of the LGBT community. I wear all those hats with pride. I've been with the Coast Guard for 19 years, been with my wife for 16 of those years. This experience has allowed me to be more empathetic and fight for causes that don't necessarily directly affect me. People fought for me to be free, I pay it forward by being a champion for others who don't have a voice."
