BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS LONE STAR

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Dallas
· 2 hrs ·

Meet the Lone Star Big Brother of the Year, Paul, and his Little Brother Malachi! Malachi was just 8 years old when his mom decided to sign him up for Big Brothers Big Sisters with the goal to find “A Big Brother who can add a male influence and show him how to be a boy”. Enter Big Brother Paul, he showed his commitment to Malachi by meeting consistently and participating in BBBS events – designed to expose Littles to new experiences, build confidence and just have fun.

Through the course of the match, Paul sought to fill the needs in Malachi’s life. When his Little Brother’s grades began to drop in middle school, Paul sought the assistance of his Match Support Specialist. A referral was made for a BBBS Education Consultation. Malachi was provided with guidance and tools to help him achieve academic success. Paul also took Malachi to college sporting events and tours, so that he could get a sense of the college atmosphere and what was possible for him. Paul made a point of introducing Malachi to others in the community who had achieved success by hard work and perseverance.

Malachi’s mom was asked about her son’s match and wrote the following:
“Paul has been a constant in our lives for the past 8+ years. He hasn't missed a special event, practice, holiday or anything that meant something to Malachi. He is always here to listen, solve problems, help with school, encourage Malachi to pursue a higher education, think about and be interested in college, or just be silly. He has been a great support through health issues and the loss of family members. Paul is like the big brother Malachi doesn't have and has always stood in the gap and done whatever he can to make Malachi feel loved, and for that I will be forever grateful.”

Malachi is now 17, a high school graduate, and Paul has been a consistent presence for over half of Malachi’s life. Paul not only showed Malachi how to be a boy, but how to become a man.

Safe Driving Alert! To find out what and who influences teenagers behind the wheel, The Allstate Foundation followed two paths. First, they conducted a series of focus groups and commissioned a national survey of teen attitudes toward driving. Then they consulted the most up-to-date scientific data on brain development and adolescent psychology. Their approach - examining the attitudes and motivations that influence teen driving - marks a departure from traditional avenues that typically focus on technical driving skills, highway and vehicle safety, or state and federal legislation. What they learned is troubling in some respects, heartening in others.

This week, discuss with your Little the root causes of unsafe teen driving - including social pressure, brain development, and the attitudes they breed. http://bit.ly/2pL7BZd

Teen Safe Driving Parent Resources – Allstate Foundation

#GetThereSafe is the Allstate Foundation's signature program to promote teen safe driving in the community. It includes engaging activities to help teens get home safely every day. One such activity is the Parent-Teen Agreement. Remember, parents are the No. 1 resource for teens when it comes to learning to drive. Teens want to know what is expected of them. Adults and teens can use the Allstate Foundation's template agreement to come up with mutually agreed-upon rules of the road before handing over the keys to the car. Take advantage of this resource to help guide your Little through the licensing process.Check out the parent-teen agreement and talk to your mentee about safe driving next time you message them! http://bit.ly/2pRDM4C

Congress for Kids: [Legislative Branch]: The Veto

On this day in 1792, George Washington cast the 1st presidential veto in U.S. history on the earlier apportionment bill of Apportionment Act of 1792-setting the number of members of the United States House of Representatives at 105. Washington made two objections in a letter to the House describing the reason for his veto. The first objection made in the letter was that the bill did not have a uniform ratio to reach the numbers of representatives to population set forth in the bill. Secondly, the bill "allotted to eight of the States more than one for every thirty thousand" as delimited by Article I Section II of the United States Constitution. The next day, the House attempted to override the President's veto but failed to reach the two thirds vote required and on April 10th efforts began to revise the bill a third time.http://bit.ly/2nJEyQJ

This week, discuss with your Little the importance of Presidential Veto and United States House of Representatives.

Using appealing, full-color illustrations, and engaging activities, Congress for Kids will extend your learning in the basics about the American federal government, elections, and citizenship.

On March 22, 1861, the first U.S. nursing school was chartered. The history of nursing education had a long and varied role in the United States. Before the late 1800s little formal education was available to train nursing students. Officially, in 1873, the Bellevue Hospital School of Nursing, of New York City, was founded. It was the first school of nursing in the United States to be founded on the principles of nursing established by Florence Nightingale. The School operated at Bellevue Hospital until its closure in 1969. The nature of nursing education and nursing qualifications varies considerably across the world. Since the mid 20th century nursing education in many countries has undergone many enhancements.

This week, explore with your Little the rich history of nursing as a profession and inspirational nurses throughout history. http://bit.ly/2nn9gBP

As caretakers of children, family and community, it was natural that women were the nurses, the caregivers, as human society evolved. Nursing may be the oldest known profession, as some nurses were paid for their services from the beginning. This was especially true of wet nurses, who nursed a baby…

The Allstate Foundation published a report on how "it might not be your father's Oldsmobile, but it's still your father's driver education." They found that driver's education uses an outdated approach to teen driving safety that effects modern teens safety and attitude towards safe driving. Furthermore, they explore the data regarding driver's education and suggestions on how driver's education can become more relatable to teenage drivers.

Check out the full report and share with your Little ideas for making the driving education more relatable. http://bit.ly/2neftzJ
