Ladies and gentlemen- the fabulous Beth Holland Blute! Welcome to the NAB!!

Beth Blute is another new member of UD's National Alumni Board. Read her UD story here:

"Since 1979, UD has been a place of family to me. I have had the pleasure of knowing six of the university’s nine presidents, including Dr. Hibbs as an undergraduate.

I dropped out of high school in rural Oklahoma to attend UD. My father, a retired Army colonel, had read George Weigel, Mel Bradford, and other UD voices, and wanted his last daughter to have a liberal education. As a registrar, Sybil Novinski admitted me without a high school diploma as there were no advanced classes available for my senior year. I became a politics major, intrigued by ideas of how man governs himself. My favorite memories are late-night conversations about books and classes and ideas—and also, falling in and out of love at Groundhog.

A couple of days before graduation, I walked up the hill to Carpenter and asked for a job in Admissions. I have very fond memories of the four years I spent recruiting seniors from across the Deep South, Oklahoma, and Houston; I also took trips to conduct interviews with students in Chicago and New York. I’m proud to name two current Board of Trustee members among those I recruited: Charlie Baumann and Richard Husseini, and I once discovered that my confessor was among my recruits years before at a rural Mississippi high school! My high point, however, was asking Pete Blute to assist at a college fair in Houston, in exchange for which I accepted a date with him. I loved explaining UD to parents, educators, and students and I have never stopped.

Five of our six children are (or soon will be) UD alumni. Our family covers several disciplines across the curriculum: we have two chemistry majors, one politics, one English, and a junior majoring in French with a computer science concentration. Three of our children have married or are engaged to UD alumni, which expands our family to include biology, physics, and psychology.

Pete and I have been donors since the tenure of Frank Lazarus, and have hosted send-off parties for admitted students many times. We feel a debt of gratitude to UD for our education, almost all of which was paid for by scholarships and financial aid.

My career has been the managing of our home in Houston, children, two rental properties in Irving, and our family finances. With the children grown, I spend time doing pet therapy with our Border Collie Scout, visiting juvenile detention facilities, dementia care centers, special education classrooms, and pediatric therapy clinics -- places where the poor in spirit are. Scout was jailed during Charity Week last year, where he worked his magic on incarcerated students for several hours.

Lately, I’ve had a renewed excitement about reading good literature, from Tolkien and Lewis to Waugh and Graham Green, and discussing books with my “Well-Read Mom” group. I just finished Their Eyes Were Watching God, Angle of Repose, and Just Mercy. I would love to involve more alumni, faculty, and staff in the book club begun at UD already, to increase the reading and sharing of good literature.

As a member of the NAB, I will represent the large (in the area and in number) Houston alumni community. I look forward to serving on the Traditions and Class Agents committees and working to make new connections between UD and its alumni!"

This is a fun and easy way to give to UD students! We hope you will consider doing so.

Due Santi and the University of Dallas: Un Piccolo Paradiso

Many thanks to our wonderful, yet humble NAB VP, Daniel Milligan , for his efforts in bringing this project to life. As Danny explains,

“We had the easiest part of this whole endeavor. The editors, Greg Roper and Andrew Moran, our great publisher, and all of the contributors did all of the really difficult work to make this project possible.”

This is a fabulous celebration of the Due Santi Campus and its’ 25th Anniversary.

“The campus deserves a publication that matches its beauty, and I think that this book lives up to those standards. For those reasons alone I think the book is a must have for any lover of the UD Rome Program and of Due Santi in particular.”, says Danny.

We are grateful for Danny and his wife, Kathy, for their generosity in helping to provide Scholarships for Romers in need.

“The fact that every book sold will help future Romers experience a truly transformative experience should make every Romesick alum want to purchase a copy or three, or more.”

Let’s heed Danny’s words and purchase as many books as possible!!

What better way to celebrate the Feast of the Due Santi than by reading about the forthcoming Due Santi and the University of Dallas: Un Piccolo Paradiso, the new book co-edited by Greg Roper and Andrew Moran. To learn more about the book and to pre-order, check out the website https://www.duesantibook.com/ There you'll see a host of familiar names among the contributors: Thomas Hibbs, Wayne Ambler, Peter Hatlie, Lyle Novinski, Gregory Roper, Andrew Moran, Daniel Milligan, Vallery Bergez Hrbacek, Silvia De Simone, Lisa Fougerousse Mobus, and Michael Housewright. The History Press staff, led by Ben Gibson (class of 2006) has put together a beautiful book featuring 80 photographs that capture the history of the Rome Program and the life of Due Santi, everything from the Piga family who built the villa to the G[r]eek Olympics, from ancient Bovillae to the curriculum to the wines. Even better, all profits go to support the Charles T. Uhl Memorial Scholarship AND an alumni couple, Kathy and Danny Milligan are donating $10 for each book sold, up to $20,000 to the scholarship. Go read about the book and buy it!

As the summer rolls around, even in these unique and challenging times the National Alumni Board executes the peaceful transition of power from one leadership group to another. And next week when we meet to begin a new term we will also be saying goodbye to a great leader.

Andrew Farley, We want to thank you for all that you've done for the NAB and the University of Dallas. Your passion for our hilltop home has been an inspiration to all of us. Your leadership these past years has put us on the road to be what the NAB can and should be for our University. We greatly appreciate your energy.

We also want to express a special thank you to Tara and the entire Farley Family, as no man is as great as you without a tremendous supporting cast.

We look forward to your continued participation in our efforts, though your role may change, your love for our beloved alma mater will remain strong.

We hope that UD Alumni will hold dear this story of our history on this Memorial Day.http://udallasnews.com/2016/11/09/t...

Great story about a great guy! Congratulations Andrew Butler!

“Music on the Mall” every Friday afternoon is a treasured tradition for many students at UD. Between the music, the occasional barbecue, and the friends, it comes as no surprise that the weekly celebration attracts prospective students such as Andrew Butler, BA ’20, once was.

I wanted to share this story published today about the progress our University has made with the COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund highlighting one of the students we were able to help. I found the story to be very moving, and I hope you do as well.

While this isn't how any of us expected to spend our spring, it's gratifying to see the fruits of our labor in a tangible way. The UD community has really come together, with $88,848 raised from 198 gifts as of yesterday at noon.

If you would like to help, please share the story on social media and spread the word! We have many students in need with an unclear timeline for when things will return to normal.

The great and wonderful Bob & Annmarie Kelly!

“One of the many joys of life at UD when I was a student was running into Father Cain,” said Trustee Annmarie (Flynn) Kelly, BA ’91. She and her husband, Robert (Bob) Kelly, MA ’92 PhD ’95, recently endowed the Father Thomas Matthias Cain Memorial Scholarship to support philosophy majors at UD. “He was fiercely, persistently joyful.” http://ow.ly/9qBa50z2x0b

Reflecting on the Stations in This, the Strangest of Lents

As we find ourselves deprived of many things that we had taken for granted, we turn to Christ, who was stripped of everything: physical safety, companionship, worldly honor, even his clothing, and ultimately of life itself.
