The City of Jackson’s Racial Equity Commission is excited to invite you to our community listening session - where we encourage you to “Speak Up Jackson”!

Wednesday, April 22nd at 6:30pm @ Jackson Symphony Orchestra Hall. Doors open at 6:15.

This is a rare opportunity to let your voice and experience with city wide services be heard and have impact on the way Jackson moves forward.

“The change and improvements Jackson wants to see are found in our collective voice and those closest to the issue are most qualified to offer suggestions to address the issue. Show up Jackson, we need to hear from you.” ~ Kesha Hamilton, Chair of Racial Equity Commission

‘Budgets are moral documents that reflect what you value.’ - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (loosely)

Let’s be clear, I’m a solid no on extra duty pay for admin for bond duties.

Don’t let them fool you - it matters where the money comes from. You cannot pay for bond responsibilities from the general fund. But bond dollars could pay for an outside org to oversee the bond projects.

These bond dollars cannot pay teachers, provide supplies or support programming (general fund dollars do this.)

The general fund are monies we collect from the public to support our district and have limited allowances for how they can be used.

It’s that time of month again - November JPS School Board Monthly Meeting.

When - Tuesday, November 18th at 6:00pm
Where - Jackson High School 2nd Floor Library/Media Center.

An interesting item on the agenda this month - I’m interested in your thoughts.

Agenda link in comments.

Review the pictures - what are your thoughts..

These comments were shared in June but they are always relevant and valid.

As a governing official elected by you to serve my motto is “Transparent, Accountable and Accessible”.

I lean into that by informing you of your rights, our policies, answering emails, responding to your phone calls, and writing/editing policies to reflect the current needs of parents, students and teachers - even when my counterparts disagree.

I need you to know in this message that you always have recourse - you elected us and we serve you. Remember that when you’re told otherwise. And bonus info - it’s always more effective coming from the collective..

What an amazing time was had at this years LP conference.

I was having such a good time that I didn’t take many pictures (most of the below are from other folks).

But the work remains that, “We must organize together and govern for all” which has always aligned with my personal ideology around my board governance and community service.

While we had amazing breakout sessions, LP never disappoints in understanding the necessity of self-care and the refueling of us - every conference is amazing but this one unlocked new levels of fun - truly one for the books!

Absolutely energized and refueled - Thank you LP for always doing it big for us. ❤️🙏🏾

Update: Former Vice President Derek Dobies removed from his position as VP, is never to hold office again while on the school board and was also censured.

The below article references me as making a statement - I did not make the statement, the articles’ writer incorrectly attributed it to me.

Derek Dobies lost his leadership position after adding union language to the superintendent's contract, raising conflict of interest concerns.

Trustee Kesha Hamilton voted to rescind the policy. She said the policy was repetitive, read like a memo and wasted the district’s time because it didn’t go beyond existing policies.

She added that she is known in the community as someone who embodies diversity, equity and inclusion. If the policy had substance, she would have voted against removing it, she said.

“I don’t agree with this idea of just running away because threats are being made,” Hamilton said.

Superintendent Patterson cited legal compliance concerns as the board voted 6-1 to rescind the October 2024 initiative.
