District Attorney Dorothy V. Hull was officially sworn into office at the Georgia State Capitol in Governor Brian Kemp’s office. This special occasion marked the beginning of her leadership of the Towaliga Judicial Circuit and her continued commitment to serving the citizens of Butts, Lamar, and Monroe Counties.

Yesterday, a Butts County jury convicted Nathan Shane Upchurch in the hit-and-run death of Brooke Sides. Following the verdict, the Honorable Judge Wilson sentenced the defendant to 5 years in prison- the maximum on the offense that the jury found the defendant guilty of after deliberations. The case was tried by DA Dorothy Hull and Deputy Chief ADA Carolee Reed Jordan and investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

This case was a heartbreaking reminder of the devastating consequences of leaving someone behind in their time of greatest need. We remain committed to seeking justice for victims and their families and are grateful to the jury for their service and careful attention throughout this trial.

Today we remember Brooke Sides and honor her life and family.

Congratulations to Intern Jami Strickland who is graduating from Middle Georgia State University with her Bachelor’s in Social Work. She spent two semesters in our office and is heading straight to UGA for the MSW program. She presented a speech to her cohort as this year’s President’s Scholar Recipient at the cording and pinning ceremony. Victim Services Director and Jami’s field supervisor Lorraine Bunn was honored to pin her tonight. Best wishes for your path ahead, Jami!

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Victim Services Division at the Care Cottage invites the public to attend a drop-in Open House on May 14, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The event will be held at 36 Langston Avenue.
Guests will have the opportunity to tour the facility, meet staff members, and learn more about the services provided to victims and their families.
The Monroe County Victim Services Division offers a wide range of support, including advocacy, forensic interviews, counseling resources, crisis intervention, court support, and trauma-informed services all provided in a safe and supportive environment.
The Care Cottage was established in 1992 by former Sheriff John Cary Bittick. Gail Kitchings served as the facility’s first director.

Alumna Dorothy Vinson Hull (’93) has been appointed district attorney for the Towaliga Judicial Circuit, capping a distinguished 29-year career prosecuting violent crimes and crimes against children. Hull credits her Georgia College education with shaping the critical thinking and analytical skills that have guided her service to Georgia communities.

This week we say farewell to two of the very best law clerks our office has had the privilege to work with- Nathan Gowen and Justin A. Smith

During their time here, they took on real responsibility— meeting with victims, arguing bond hearings, handling violation of probation hearings, and taking pleas. Chief Law Clerk, Nathan Gowen, even sat second chair on a full felony jury trial, delivering the opening statement and conducting direct examinations of witnesses.

We are incredibly proud of their hard work, growth, and dedication to justice as law students. Wishing them all the best in their future endeavors.
