What Does Jackson Need in a Treasurer?
Last week, I shared my thoughts on the proposed charter amendment that would change the Treasurer's Office from an elected position to an appointed one.
That discussion raises another question:
What should residents look for in the person serving as Treasurer?
The City of Jackson's Treasurer serves as a department head, works with elected officials and city staff, oversees important operations, and helps ensure accountability throughout city government.
The office sits at the intersection of stewardship, governance, and public service.
Success in that role requires more than managing investments and public resources. It requires leadership, communication, collaboration, problem solving, and the ability to work effectively with people who bring different perspectives, priorities, and responsibilities to the table.
The opportunity to serve at the intersection of stewardship, governance, and public service is one of the reasons I am seeking the office of City Treasurer. Public Service Matters!
Good stewardship is ultimately about solving problems, building trust, and serving others more effectively.
Throughout my career, I have worked in roles that required collaboration, problem solving, thoughtful decision making, resource management, and clear communication. Those experiences taught me how to bring people together, navigate challenges, evaluate competing priorities, and move organizations forward.
Service on local boards and commissions has provided additional opportunities to work alongside community leaders, city staff, department heads, and elected officials on issues affecting Jackson residents every day.
The Treasurer's Office requires someone who can build relationships, work collaboratively across government, exercise sound judgment, solve problems, maintain public trust, and provide responsible stewardship of taxpayer resources.
Those are responsibilities I respect, and those are responsibilities I am prepared to undertake.
