Let’s clear something up—because there’s a narrative being pushed that is simply not true.

In 2020, the residents of Jackson voted to expand the Open Space Fund. That referendum was very clear about how those funds could be used.

It was not limited to just purchasing open space.

The approved uses include:

Open space acquisition

Recreation (including parks and athletic facilities)

Farmland preservation

Historic preservation

Maintenance and related costs

That wasn’t hidden. That wasn’t vague. That was the question placed in front of voters and it passed.

So when some claim that using these funds for parks and recreation is a “misuse,” that’s simply incorrect.

You may disagree with how the funds are being allocated. That’s fair.

You may want to prioritize land acquisition more heavily. Also fair.

But calling it illegal or misuse is false.

The funds are being used exactly as authorized by the voters.

Funds were used for parks and other legal uses and voted on by every council since 2020. EVERY COUNCIL!

And let’s be honest suggesting residents didn’t understand what they were voting for is not just wrong, it’s disrespectful. The question was public. The language was clear. The vote was decisive.

We are happy to see results on day one and hope that we continue to see more movement on this important issue. We are hoping that the Jackson Police Department shares more information with the public on the criminal activity discovered.

UPDATE: Crackdown on Illegal Rentals Day One

CRIMINAL ACTIVITY UNCOVERED

I can officially report that 50% of all the
inspections conducted today led to the discovery of rental violations. This marks the most aggressive crackdown on illegal renting operations in Jackson Township history.

Rental violations were not the only thing uncovered by our inspectors. In the course of one
inspection, it was determined that criminal activity was present and operating within the property. This discovery was immediately reported to local law enforcement, who is actively investigating.

This incident underscores the critical importance of our efforts and the extent to which they will continue to keep Jackson safe.

We have begun the new yearly inspections.

In case you missed it...

The Jackson Council responds to residents' complaints over lack of code enforcement on properties identified with landlord registration problems, that have not been looked into, according to township records.

Did you know?

The Jackson Council, which is the legislative branch of government (similar to Congress and the Senate) does not manage any employees or departments. That management lies completely within the jurisdiction of the Mayor's office and the administration. The council can only request that the ordinances they create be enforced, but has no authority to make any employees perform their duties.

The mayor's office, as the executive branch (essentially the White House and all agencies) is ultimately responsible for making sure complaints by residents get answered and that code enforcement and other agencies perform their duties.

We invite residents to continue notifying the council when essential issues fall through the cracks so the council can follow up with the mayor's office to get answers. We also invite you to come to our next meeting to ask essential questions and get meaningful and accurate answers.
