Guardian ad Litem - New Hanover and Pender Counties

As we continue to celebrate Black History Month and honor our African American GAL staff and volunteers, next up is Mia Green, GAL volunteer in District 5 and recently hired as the GAL Volunteer Recruiter for District 4.

When asked "Why did you become a Guardian ad Litem?" Mia answered, "Our society commonly favors those with more money, resources, education, etc. I’ve seen the neglect that is shown to people without these privileges, especially kids. I became a Guardian ad Litem because I see myself in them. Being a GAL allows me to take part in bringing light to dark situations. I’m able to provide hope to kids who didn’t know there is a way out. I feel our communities need more GALs and people who stand up for children. Our kids need to know they are not alone."

I decided to become a Guardian Ad Litem after seeing an ad in the Sun Journal. After 36 (1/2) years as an educator, I believed I could extend my skills to be a voice for children in need. Since becoming a GAL, I have been successful in communicating and expressing the concerns of my clients. My one goal is to always seek the best interest of my clients.

'We are failing these children': Foster care system struggles in pandemic :: WRAL.com

Trained child advocates needed. Contact us for more information. 😕

Child neglect and abuse during the coronavirus pandemic create challenges for an already strained foster care system. The growing worry is that the problems go undetected, and even when at-risk children are identified, there aren't enough safe places to put them.

TREE OF PERMANENCE - As 2020 comes to a close, we want to be sure that the Guardian ad Litem volunteers know how much of an impact they have made in the lives of so many children, especially during a pandemic. How many children have been provided permanence this year, you ask?? A TOTAL OF 78 CHILDREN IN ONSLOW COUNTY FOUND THEIR FOREVER HOMES!

We can't thank all of you enough for the time and dedication you provided these very grateful children!
