The Antartica Experience

Enjoying our historical issue? Check out this article from 1987, entitled "The Antartica Experience," detailing the events Marines from MWSS-272 experienced during Operation Deep Freeze '87. They were even bestowed the honor of the rare Antartic Service Medal.

Most people have heard the saying, “neither hail nor snow nor gloom of night will stop a postman.” But how many know that not even temperatures of 100 degrees below zero will stop the Marines of MWSS-272 Weather from accomplishing their mission?

"EMERGENCY WATER OUTAGE NOTIFICATION FOR RESIDENTS OF TARAWA TERRACE, KNOX COVE, KNOX LANDING AND CAMP JOHNSON: At approximately 6 PM Sunday night, a large break in the drinking water line serving Tarawa Terrace, Knox Cove and Camp Johnson was found near Northeast Creek. In order to fix the break, the line had to be turned off, leaving only the water stored in the elevated tanks to serve these specific areas. Since that time, water usage has depleted all of the stored water and there is now no water service in these areas. Emergency water utility crews will be working through the night to repair the break. Although no specific time estimate is currently available, we do expect water service to be restored on Monday.
> When water service is restored, the NC Division of Water Resources advises water consumers to boil all water used for human consumption, to include drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation or use bottled water. Periods of low or no pressure in the distribution system can introduce bacteria into the water system. Vigorous boiling for one minute should kill any disease causing organisms that may be present in the water. All residents in these areas should conserve water whenever possible. This advisory remains in effect until further notice."

VMM-365 Marine sergeant strives for excellence

“I did three years of Air Force and one year of Army JROTC when I was in high school, but when it came down to choosing a branch, I had to go with the best of the best,” said Sgt. Reddley Mikkelsen, Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 365 crew chief.

Born in 1979, aboard what was then Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Wash., Sgt. Reddley Mikkelsen, Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 365 crew chief, has always strived for excellence both as a Marine and as a civilian.

HMLA-167 celebrates 46 years of squadron excellence

“It’s all about camaraderie,” said Sgt. Maj. Charles Wells, HMLA-167 sergeant major. “Our Marines did a fantastic job putting this event together, and it’s nice to get out here to do events such as this one, bringing us together as a squadron.”

How does a squadron celebrate 46 years of tradition and excellence? If you ask the Marines of Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 167 the answer is simple – bagpipes.

Beware Life insurance solicitation

"Life insurance is an integral part of any long-term plan for the financial security of you and your family and there are decent, dedicated professionals who can help steer you to the product that is right for you. Unfortunately, there are also those in the industry who market to junior service members, pitching inferior, unsuitable products through deceptive, unfair or abusive sales tactics."

"With less than a year in the Marine Corps, I found out I was pregnant (surprise!). I told my husband my career was over – I couldn’t possibly make it work." Click here to read about Cpl. Mary M. Carmona's experience being a mom in the Marine Corps

I awake with a start to a male voice singing “I’ve got the magggicc in meeee,” at the top of his lungs. Still in an early-morning daze, I struggle to grab my phone and shut my alarm off. It’s only 4:35 a.m., and I’m rolling out of bed.

April recognizes child abuse prevention

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. During the month of April, we will focus on how to prevent children from being harmed physically and emotionally. This year’s theme is “It only takes a minute.” How quickly can a child disappear in a store when you turn your back for a minute? How quickly can a child run out into traffic when you are simply trying to get another child out of the car? How quickly can a child be hurt when you are angry, upset, or you lose your temper and hit your child? It only takes a minute. #newriverrotovue
