STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF FORMER OCS BOE CHAIR PAM THOMAS
Onslow County Schools, December 20, 2020 — On behalf of Onslow County Schools and the Onslow County Board of Education, we mourn the passing of former Board of Education Chair Pam Thomas. Our sincere condolences to her family and all those she taught and coached, and who served with her during her time with the school system and on the Board of Education, or those who knew her for her work as a passionate advocate for the children of our county.
Ms. Thomas embodied the idea of leadership, and selflessly gave of her time and effort to support our school system, our students and staff, and children across the county.
She could always be counted on to be present at as many school events as possible. If there was a performance, recognition, or ceremony, she would be there to help with handing out the trophies and medals or just be a friendly face in the audience. In addition to attending events, she spent many years as moderator of the OCS Elementary Academic Derby.
Her passion for this county was embodied in her 35 years working for OCS, and through her time as a member of the Board of Education, from her first election in 2004, and her service as Chair from 2010 through this year.
OCS Superintendent Dr. Barry Collins, says, “I had the opportunity to work closely with Ms. Thomas, and found her to be an excellent leader who worked cooperatively with our state and local elected officials for the betterment of our school system.”
“All who worked with Pam appreciated her support for our school family. She loved this school system, the teachers, the staff, and most of all, the students. Pam was a true servant leader who always put the needs of our children first. Her passing is a great loss for not only the school system, but for the entire county. She will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with her family during this difficult time as we remember and celebrate her dedication to this community.”

Administration of the oath of office in two separate ceremonies will fulfill statutory requirements that newly elected Board of Education members be seated in December. Selection of a chairperson and vice-chairperson will be made during the Board’s next regular meeting on January 5, 2021.
In order to practice appropriate social distancing and comply with the Governor’s Executive Orders due to the current COVID-19 State of Emergency, participants in the meeting room for both oath of office ceremonies will be limited to staff and invited guests. Face coverings will be required. A monitor will also be available at the Regional Skills Center for viewing.

The Onslow County Board of Education meeting scheduled for Tuesday, December 1, has been postponed and rescheduled for Tuesday, December 15, 2020.
The health and safety of the OCS school community is our highest priority. Over the weekend we were informed that individuals who would be a part of Tuesday’s scheduled December BOE meeting have been exposed to, or tested positive for, COVID-19. Out of an abundance of caution for our Board members, staff, those interested in attending the meeting, and their families, postponing the December meeting is the safest course of action.

Jones and carteret have both decided on virtual learning days today. I've been told many roads are horrible, and yet not even a delayed opening? Disappointed!!
Good evening, I am wondering why my sons bus was an hour late and we recieved no phone calls from the school or the bus administrators. This is the second time in a roll they are late with no notifications.
How do I contact someone on school board with concerns of safety issues picking up my child from Blue Creek Elementary everyday? I've called the sheriff department to see about someone coming out to direct traffic. I was told the principal would have to call & request. I've left this message with the school. I called 2x now left messages with the onslow county school board voicemail. Unfortunately have not heard back. The traffic is very dangerous when picking up children. The road itself is busy and fast pace. People are lined the ditch almost to the light & also in the turn lane almost gets backed up to the high school. It would be nice to have a sheriff or 2 helping guide and stop traffic so parents can enter & exit the school safely. Also would like to add the school buses can not even use the turn lane to pull into school at pick up because parents like myself are already in the turn lane. This is causing the school buses to make wide turns and a huge safety issue on them too. It would be nice to help make the school pick up more safe. Thank you.
Isn't Mr. Officer Brown turning 93 today????? Where is his annual photo?!?! ☺️ We need to wrap him up in the same bubble wrap with Miss Betty White because some people are simply #irreplaceable 🤗💯
Were you aware that parents have the option to send their high school age children to in person school 4 days a week? This is in Onslow County School System. 🧐 We just found out last week.
School bus #443 just blew through red light at Gum Branch and Western. So much for bus safety.
This morning, at 645am, while my granddaughter and a neighbor's son were getting on the bus, a small silver station wagon passed the bus. This incident happened at the corner of Country Squire and Hinson Lake Rd. The bus was stopped, doors open, arm out, stop sign out, lights on and our kids were steps away from boarding. Very disturbing to witness. I hope the school will take steps to locate this person and hold him/her responsible for such blatant recklessness. *We love our bus driver*
Is there an Onslow County Virtual School page?
Is it true that as of Monday, Onslow County School bus drivers will no longer be allowed to wear any face mask which promotes the American flag or depicts anything patriotic?
Why were flags not at half staff on 9/11 Onslow County Schools? This should be a topic of discussion. Why is this not news? 2,977 INNOCENT AMERICANS DIED! My father, brother, brother-in law, and many other friends and family deployed after this date to protect our country from other TERRORIST EVENTS happening on AMERICAN SOIL! Onslow County is home to one of the biggest MilItary bases and many of those soldiers families attend YOUR SCHOOLS! UNACCEPTABLE!
So, I would like to know why the kids are being made to wear mask while outside? The governor order states that if someone is exercising or outside they shouldn't have to.
