There are so many important roles within a school. This week we celebrate and thank our School Counselors for all they do. So much of what they do supports the academic as well as the social/emotional needs of our gifted students. We thank them for being there for all students.
We wish our school counselors only the best during this week of celebration.

Thanks to community partners for making great extension and learning opportunities possible.

Grow your own milkweed plants at home to help ensure that Monarch butterflies have plenty of food to complete their migration! So much other connected reading, researching, and learning would be possible too.

2021 North Carolina Jr. Chef Competition — Child Nutrition

Calling all Junior Chefs!

This one is for high school students enrolled in a CTE course, but it might just be fun to think of what you could create given the limits:

Student teams must develop a recipe for a school lunch entrée (that meets the guidelines) to submit for the NCJCC recipe contest.

The North Carolina Junior Chef Competition (NCJCC) was created to inspire the next generation of culinary professionals, stimulate interest in locally produced agriculture, increase participation in School Nutrition Programs, and encourage healthy eating habits. The competition seeks student created...

Welcome to Rise

Are you a drive high school student with a desire to solve a global problem? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buQUsON3Vi0&feature=emb_logo

Rise is a global talent program that finds extraordinary young people who need opportunity and supports them for life as they use their talents to serve others.

An initiative of Schmidt Futures and the Rhodes Trust, Rise will build a global community of future leaders, connecting everyone who applies with a network of peers, learning resources, and additional opportunities from Rise partners around the world. Each year, Rise will select 100 Global Winners, ages 15 to 17, and provide them with individualized support throughout their lives as they commit their talents to building a better world. Winners will receive need-based financial support for university and internships, mentorship and career services, and access to funding to scale up their social impact throughout their careers.

Students can be nominated or apply directly. According to the site, “Traditional applications don’t always identify a wide range of interests and talents. So we give you a variety of opportunities to showcase your potential, from videos to projects to interviews.” Criteria: brilliance, integrity, empathy, perseverance, and calling

Deadline to set up profile: 1/29/21
Deadline to complete individual projects: 4/1/21
Interviews: May 2021-July 2021
Winners announced: July 2021

UNC Colleges Virtual Open Houses!

Monday, October 26- Friday, October 30, 2020

The UNC System will host its first-ever Virtual Open House, giving North Carolinians in all 100 counties an opportunity to explore the state’s options for public higher education. A series of eight virtual sessions will highlight the unique learning opportunities at the 16 constituent universities.

The sessions, hosted in conjunction with North Carolina Countdown to College, will run from October 26 through October 30, 2020. Each UNC System university will offer a thirty-minute presentation that features faculty, staff, and current students. In addition to providing a broad campus overview, each presentation will highlight five unique and often-overlooked institutional features and attributes. Admissions counselors will also be on hand in a separate chat room to answer specific questions students and their families might have.

Please share this information with your students and we also hope that you will be able to attend. The first 50 counselors and first 50 students that register to attend a session, will receive a UNC System notepad.

To attend any of these sessions, please register here (https://www.northcarolina.edu/unc-system-virtual-open-house/). If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Bethany Meighen, Vice President for Student Affairs, at [email protected].
