Susan Dickenson, Mayor of Jamestown NC

Susan Dickenson, Mayor of Jamestown NC I entered "semi-retirement" when the Covid pandemic shut down the industry in the spring of 2020. The location was in the Yorkshire neighborhood.

I was born and raised in High Point; attended UNC-Chapel Hill (BSBA ’82); spent 20 years in Washington, DC and Northern Virginia working in the public and private sectors; moved my family back to this area in 2003 and freelanced as an advertising and content copywriter for several local and national brands. In 2006, I joined Home Accents Today Magazine (sister publication to Ganett-owned Furniture

Today) as the Retail Editor, profiling home furnishings retailers, interior designers, product designers and covering the semiannual High Point, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Dallas and New York markets. In 2016 I was promoted to Editor-in-Chief, responsible for managing staff, deadlines, budget and layout of 32 print issues a year, plus digital content, video interviews and podcasts. I continued to work in the industry as a contractor and assisted with the startup of Home News Now, a digital trade publication. My hobbies are gardening, rockhounding, photography, quilting (I've made seven, by hand), adding to my vinyl LP collection, and fly fishing (my husband Tim taught me about 12 years ago). We became Jamestown residents in 2018, after our dream house popped up on Zillow. We drove straight to the address from our home in Greensboro, fell in love at first sight, and called a realtor while sitting in our car in front of the house. She agreed to meet us there early the next day. Tim and I arrived first, wandered into the backyard, and were speechless when we found ourselves standing in a beautiful woodland paradise of towering trees, lush green moss, and a sparkling stream flowing beneath giant rhododendron branches. When our realtor arrived, we told her we would do whatever it took to become the new owners of that gorgeous piece of property. Her response: “Do you want to see the inside of the house?”

I like living here, love my Jamestown friends and community, but over the past several years I've grown increasingly disillusioned with how the town is being run. I'm fiscally disciplined with an eye for detail and expect the same of my local government. The roles have somehow gotten reversed here - the managerial staff appears to be managing the town council instead of the town. It's time to regroup, set some boundaries, focus on our streams and drinking water, get the spending under control, ensure basic services are being provided, clean up the hazardous sites, provide more oversight, and make sure we're all on the same page.

In Memoriam: Sgt. Al Stewart Jr.
The Guilford County Veterans Memorial has lost one of its most devoted leaders, and our community has lost a remarkable veteran and public servant.

Al Stewart Jr., a longtime chairman of the Guilford County Veterans Memorial, passed away on August 15. For years, Al gave his time, energy, leadership, and heart to ensuring that the service and sacrifice of our veterans would never be forgotten.

Al's lifetime of service took him around the world. He served in Vietnam as an Army Ranger with G Company Rangers and later as a gunner on a nighthawk helicopter. His valor was recognized with the Silver Star, two Purple Hearts, and Bronze Stars with “V” devices. Decades later, he continued serving his country overseas—as a civilian advisor to the Army in Iraq for four years, with the U.S. Department of State for 15 months helping rebuild the Lebanese Police, and as an Army advisor in Afghanistan for one year.

In June 2025, Al received one of the highest honors of his life when he was inducted into the U.S. Army Ranger Hall of Fame.
His service at home was equally extraordinary. Al spent 30 years with the Greensboro Police Department, retiring as a captain, and remained a tireless advocate for veterans throughout his life. As leader of the Black Cap Military Veterans Group, he helped ensure that Memorial Day in Greensboro remained what it should be—a solemn remembrance of those who gave their lives for our nation.

At the Guilford County Veterans Memorial, Al was much more than a chairman. He was a driving force behind our mission and a steadfast guardian of the belief that veterans' stories, sacrifices, and legacies must be preserved for future generations.

We are deeply grateful for Al's leadership, his friendship, and his extraordinary lifetime of service.

Ranger. Soldier. Police officer. International advisor. Veterans advocate. Leader. Friend.

Al Stewart spent his life serving others—on battlefields, in law enforcement, overseas, and here at home. We will honor his memory by continuing the work he cared so deeply about.

Rest easy, Al. Your mission here is complete. You will not be forgotten.

REPORT A PROBLEM: Here's a homemade Table of Contents and links to Jamestown's Code of Ordinances, Code Enforcement contacts, Public Services contacts, Duke Energy's burned out street lamp service, local Sheriff, Fire Station 46, and Animal Control.

We'll keep adding to this and have placed a permanent tab ["REPORT A PROBLEM"] at the top of TheJamestowner9 dot com website.

The Town of Jamestown contracts with Alliance Code Enforcement to investigate and enforce ordinance violations (overgrown lots, junked vehicles, oversized vehicles parked on neighborhood streets, signs, etc). Residents can report […]

No deadline - there's an ETJ* position opening up in October, at least one alternate opening up soon, an opening on the Parks & Rec Committee, and enough possibilities in the coming months that we need to restock ... so now is the time to submit an application! (see LINK in comments)

Planning Board members serve a five year term and are eligible for reappointment (but not guaranteed) to a second term. Parks & Rec members serve a two-year term and are eligible for reappointment (not guaranteed) to a second and third term.

Applications are kept on file for two years. If you submitted an application in the past, and it's been more than two years, and you're still interested, you should resubmit.

The applicant pool is also used to fill positions that are vacated due to unexpected circumstances, illness or, as recently happened, if a member is deployed or expects to be unavailable for awhile.

*ETJ (extraterritorial jurisdiction) members are required to attend meetings when called (i.e., when the matter concerns an ETJ property, development or zoning issue). They aren’t required to attend non-ETJ meetings, but are certainly welcome to.
