Joy! Who doesn’t want their child to experience joy!?! We can partner with the Lord in bringing joy into our children’s lives and the best way to begin is through prayer.

Have you wondered where I went? Thankfully I am not lost and I did not give up on parenting! My husband and I are in a Discipleship Training School, for missions and ministry, in Hawaii. We are receiving training and doing local outreach for 3 months and then going out of the country for outreach for 2-3 months. The great news is that we have the privilege of working with kids and get to take some additional parenting classes to sharpen my skills. The children we are working with are at risk children from a Marshallese community here in Kona. You can still reach me for questions or encouragement!

Apparently today is national daughters day. I don’t need a “holiday” to appreciate it brag about my 3 treasures and 1 beautiful granddaughter. I would happily encourage or share what incredible gifts they are to me ❤️ Gracious, thoughtful, beautiful, kind, servanthearted, good cooks, great friends, sweet Jesus lovers, lovely worshippers. I couldn’t ask for better daughters!

Friends, God is enough! God is big enough! God is great enough! God loves you endlessly! You can trust Him with your cares. Don’t worry and don’t carry your burdens alone. Pray and leave those things at His feet. He is more than capable and He wants to be your helper. There’s no better way to teach your kids not to worry than to model giving your worries to God and trusting Him.

’t worry

Here are three helpful ways to teach listening.
✨I write these to you, not as an expert, but as one who has learned and is still learning, sometimes through mistakes and sometimes through successes, but always by God’s grace.

1. Be a good listener. Model listening intently and asking good questions.
2. Talk to your kids about how you listen to God and what that looks like in your life.
3. Help them practice listening to others . Family meal times are a great opportunity to practice taking turns listening intently and asking questions.

👂🏼“My dear brothers and sisters, understand this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger,”
‭‭James‬ ‭1:19‬ ‭CSB‬‬

✨“Not that I have already reached the goal or am already perfect, but I make every effort to take hold of it because I also have been taken hold of by Christ Jesus. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead, I pursue as my goal the prize promised by God’s heavenly call in Christ Jesus.”
‭‭Philippians‬ ‭3:12-14‬ ‭CSB‬‬

Quick to listen… not listen quick. Let us be people who are quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger. When we want someone to hurry up and tell us something, we are not taking the time to listen intently and show love or attention. Maybe it means setting down your phone for a few minutes, walking away from the computer, or turning off the television. Whatever it looks like will you take the time to listen well today?

“Listen to counsel, receive instruction, and accept correction, That you may be wise in the time to come.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭19:20‬ ‭AMP‬‬

I can still hear the AWANA song ringing through my head-
🎶Listen to advice and accept instruction and in the end you will be wise. In the end you will be wise. In the end you will be wise!🎵

I can look back at the times in my life when I did not listen to wise advice or accept instruction and they never ended well. Cultivating a teachable heart and teaching our kids to listen, and not just hear, will be invaluable to them in both the present and the future.

“The sheep that are My own hear My voice and listen to Me; I know them, and they follow Me.”
‭‭John‬ ‭10:27‬ ‭AMP‬‬

Who are you listening to? Who are you following? Which voices are your children atuning their ears to?

We have a Good Father who is The Good Shepherd. He longs for us to listen to Him so we can have abundant life.

“Understand this, my beloved brothers and sisters. Let everyone be quick to hear [be a careful, thoughtful listener], slow to speak [a speaker of carefully chosen words and], slow to anger [patient, reflective, forgiving];”
‭‭James‬ ‭1:19‬ ‭AMP There is a reason we are told to be quick to listen and slow to speak. As parents it is so important to make the most of this instruction and be excellent listeners. We can avoid many parenting mistakes my taking the time to really listen to what is going on in our kids hearts and minds. The day may come when they choose to speak to someone else because they gave up trying to get you to listen. Don’t let that become your story. Take the time to listen.
