Posting this excerpt from the blessing of Ke Kauhale ‘o Luhia which expands capacity at the Waimanalo Emergency Shelter by 20 rooms with share bathroom and kitchen. Tenants will be integrated into the existing services provided to the rest of the facility. I have been trying to get this done for 5 years - not sure if adding the Homeless budget on the house side to my committee kuleana was the magic trick…. It was a low cost project since all the infrastructure was in place and there was a big, empty parking lot. Now singles in the larger units can switch over and free up space for families.

Free. Order online for however many trees you have, then pick up and receive instructions right on Kailua Monday June 29, 5-6pm. There will be a little extra for walk-in’s, but if you order ahead they will have what you need for sure. Natural (OK for food trees) and synthetic (need to keep trimmed) pesticides, netting, and traps with pheromones available. I fought for this funding, please come and use it.

Full speed ahead with a compromise measure with $500,000 in funding in the City budget passed yesterday to eliminate parking on Mokulua Drive. They will install clear signage and pave and stripe several “loading zones” on the mauka side of the road next to favored beach accesses. The timeline is this year. The second phase is widening cross streets by 2 feet and marking one side for parking on the pavement. At that time they intend to also ban parking on Aalapapa. potential unfunded 3rd phase would be to make formal paved parking spots on Mokulua and Aalapapa which would allow legal restricted hours. Lit is only on the “unimproved sidewalk” (dirt) parking spots that they cannot set hours because it is technically illegal at all times.

Just a few snippets from the Malama Honua 8th grade graduation. I had the honor of saying they met the DOE and Charter school requirements, but this small school does so much more than that! These students carry such a profound sense of place, identity, and cultural connection. Change is happening in our State and schools like this are part of it.
