Don Cooney for Kalamazoo

Don Cooney for Kalamazoo This is the public page for Dr. Don Cooney, city commissioner in kalamazoo Far too many children live in poverty. Radical injustice diminishes us all.

Today in Kalamazoo, too many are eager to work, but can't find sustainable housing or a well-paid job. Young people face formidable challenges in a new economy and a global pandemic. Yet, we are not powerless. This city has exceptional resources: outstanding schools and colleges, world-class businesses, skilled human service organizations, compassionate churches, a remarkable array of programs in

art, theatre and music, a diverse community with talented people who care about each other. Join us in our efforts to realize Dr. King's vision as we work to:
-Develop an economy which provides accessible housing and living wage jobs for ALL people.
-Help each family succeed and realize full potential.
-Lead each child to realize the Promise.
-Keep our City beautiful and thriving.

Yesterday, the nation honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who gave his life for genuine equality for all.

In a day of service, we hope you were able to remember and honor his memory in Kalamazoo and beyond, and reflect on ways we can all model a peaceful, equitable coexistence in true Justice for all humanity.
If you were unable to attend an event this week to honor Dr. King’s message and legacy, try listening to one of his speeches and considering the work left to be done.

Vice Mayor of Kalamazoo, Don Cooney asked the City Staff and Leadership to put in as much effort toward a plan to address poverty as they have converting one way streets back to two way streets at the July 5, 2023 public meeting.
He compares total approvals of nearly 7 million dollars allotted just for planning the roadway project before construction begins to what is currently invested by the city in anti-poverty planning.

Cooney voted “No” on additional funding for the project and says he will not support spending until a plan is formed and advanced to reduce poverty and ALICE rates for Kalamazoo citizens. He says if the city can pursue grant money for roadways to access the city, they should pursue grants for a city-driven, coordinated poverty reduction plan for people living here.
