Apoya a Itsï-asuli invitándolos a presentarse en tu próximo evento.

Lugarda Rodríguez fundó Itsï-Asuli hace cuatro años. El nombre está escrito en purépecha, la lengua hablada por los habitantes de las montañas. Significa "el lugar donde nace el agua azul". El logotipo representa a cuatro bailarines que forman la silueta de una mariposa, símbolo del estado de Michoacán, de donde ella es originaria.

El grupo colabora como voluntario con organizaciones sin fines de lucro que apoyan a inmigrantes, recauda fondos para la lucha contra el cáncer y, sobre todo, mantiene una presencia constante al servicio de la comunidad. Gran parte del trabajo de Lugarda está enfocado en niños y adolescentes. "Es mucho más que clases de danza; es ayudarlos a salir de la depresión y a volver a disfrutar la vida".

Gracias a este trabajo, los estudiantes tienen la oportunidad de reencontrarse con su cultura, conocer quiénes son sus padres y abuelos, y recordar de dónde vienen.

¡Contáctalos para tomar clases o apoyar su causa! Lugarda tiene la costumbre de no rechazar a ningún estudiante por no poder pagar. Para muchas familias que ahora viven aquí y no pueden regresar a su país, este es el lugar donde aprenden sobre la tierra de la que provienen sus antepasados mientras construyen una nueva vida en este país.

In the foreground of Cook County Hospital in Chicago, the plaque Chicago quotes Louis Pasteur. "One does not ask of one who suffers: What is your country and what is your religion? One merely says: You suffer, that is enough for me. You belong to me, and I shall help you."

This is accepted at face value for someone in a hospital. How often we ask our neighbors to qualify themselves before we let them access life in safety and security, without fearing the state of their home and the community surrounding it, just like we're seeing in our neighborhoods like North Lawn.

When we uplift the most vulnerable in our community, we uplift all our community.

There are few groups in any given KC organization that literally light up my face when I see them. The Youth Services team at Jewish Vocational Service (JVS), Kansas City is not only thriving doing amazing work day-to-day with community members, but they are a true example of how a group of people from all walks of life can work together. Each of them has a specific role that manages long hours and heavy work loads…and yet when you get to see them throughout KC neighborhoods, you feel a true sense of joy. They take time to look you in the eye, to identify with your struggle, and then to curate pure moments of deep laughter.

Last month I had the delight of going out to their graduation celebration for 3 amazing refugee youth, who against all obstacles thrown at them, graduated from high school! We celebrate these amazing young people. AND despite their reluctance to receive accolades, we celebrate this amazing TEAM who continually rejuvenate my soul and remind me to find joy in this beautiful and hard life.

Poor housing quality can cause asthma, reading disabilities, high blood pressure, anxiety, and depression.

Some conditions a resident can control to make their home healthy: keeping the home clean, dry, and ventilated. Other factors, like ensuring a home is safe, maintained, free of contaminants (like lead and pests), with effective heating and cooling, is dependent on the developer, the neighborhood, the city.

Maybe organizations and departments focus on healthcare, diet, and avoiding harmful substances, but too few provide resources for housing conditions. Mercy in the City's mission is to develop quality, affordable infill housing for GKC's most vulnerable populations. It takes a village to to meet the huge need for quality housing conditions and we want to share a village member who has resources.

Children's Mercy sees how many people in our city, especially children and elders, suffer from unhealthy housing conditions. Their Healthy Homes Program provides in-person and virtual home assessments. "After the home assessment, families receive a report that includes the findings and an issue and action plan along with potential community resources" including an in-house home repair grant for qualified applicants.

Eliase (pronounced El-ee-ahsay) has been a neighbor in Kansas City for 3 years now. This brave, joyful, and responsible young man sat down with us to share his story. Eliase speaks 5 languages and was born in the Republic of Congo to a loving father and mother. At the age of 3 his mother became paralyzed about 6 months after having her second child. Eliase shares how his mother spent a year in the hospital and he remembers missing her so much. This however would not be the most difficult trial he was to face. Due to economic hardship, his father was unable to stay at home and no immediate family members were able to care for the children...

He spent over a decade in Malawi before his family was able to be resettled here in KC. He loves it here; his family is together and he continues to support his parents. He has a job at a local manufacturing company, but knows he is still trying to understand all the aspects of American culture. Things that still confuse him are our medical systems and why they cost so much and take so long and why it’s so difficult to take off from work when you are sick.

Jasmine courageously and generously shared her story with us before her poetry reading at our Community Fundraiser in February.

“I am still helping the community.
I volunteer at Red Cross.
I translate for the culture.
I help.
I enjoy it.
I want to continue my studying.
I still want to be a community helper.”
