“ Collaboration requires daring leadership from everyone. It means having tough conversations, staying curious, and learning how to listen.”- Brene Brown
On September 16th, 2019 a parent first reached out to one of the founders of KLC to discuss concerns regarding the curriculum and practices being used in our district. The collaboration has continued since then. Collaboration with parents in our community. Collaboration with educators in our district. Collaboration with our Board of Trustees(BOT). Collaboration with candidates for Katy ISD BOT. Collaboration with reading experts in the state of Texas and around the country. Collaboration with state elected legislative officials and our appointed leaders.
Last night, the Katy ISD board of trustees approved several proposed changes to the district’s 2-year strategic plan. One such change feels surreal to those of us at Katy Literacy Coalition. There were 8 initial strategic plan goals when the district originally presented the plan to the board in March 2022. The board and district have worked together to expand to include more specific, measurable action items that impact student outcomes.
While there were several exciting and much needed goal benchmark targets, we at KLC are most excited about Goal 1, benchmark 3.
Goal 1: All learning environments will foster engagement by integrating personalized learning experiences.
1.3: Conduct a mid-cycle review of current elementary instructional resources for phoenix awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension including spelling and writing with adoption of new anchor resources, aligned with the science of reading, in place by the start of the 2023-2024 school year.
923 days of much work, many conversations, many meetings and far too many emails to count have led us to this exciting and pivotal moment which will change the literacy trajectory for ALL students in Katy ISD.
This profound and momentous shift away from failed balance literacy approaches inclusive of Lucy Calkins, Teachers College Units of Study in Reading, Phonics and Writing and Fountas and Pinnell benchmark assessment system to the Science of Reading could not have been possible without daring leaders who listened, trusted and got curious.
Thank you to the following individuals who without them, this incredible feat would not have been possible: Greg Schulte Katy ISD Board of Trustees Leah Ludzik Wilson Lance Redmon - Katy ISD Board of TrusteesDuke Keller - Katy ISD Board of TrusteesRebecca Fox for Katy ISD School Board Dawn Champagne Katy ISD Board of Trustees Pamela Toman Traci Ferris Emily Binks Cantrell Victor Perez for Katy ISD School Board

As a general rule, we don’t weigh in on political races. Especially local ones. With so much disinformation out there, we felt compelled to put in our $0.02. Vote Victor Perez for Katy ISD School Board for Katy ISD position 1. More to come on why we voted
Did you prevail?
Showing our support at soccer today.
The entrance for voting at the Merrell Center is on the west side. Most of the candidate posters are in the east. Save yourself a walk and park on the west. Unless you want a nice walk.
Voted this morning. It's good to see our computer votes are now backed with a paper trail.
