I am a 9-year teacher of Harmony Public Schools. My son was formerly a Kindergarten student at Harmony Science Academy-Katy. On September 13, 2019, Laura Mattingly, principal at Harmony Science Academy-Katy, demanded the AP of Academics, bring my 5 year old child to her office. When my child got to her office, she yelled at him, “Get in here, boy! You’re mine!” She grabbed my son by his arm, leaving a mark, and shoved him face first in a corner and made him stand there for a prolonged period of time. The Operations Manager and the Engagement Coordinator, were both in her office when Laura Mattingly assaulted my child, and did absolutely nothing to help him. My 5 year old was crying, and Laura Mattingly screamed at him, “I don’t want to hear it!” Harmony Science Academy-Katy did not notify me at any time that my child had been alone with these 3 women in Laura Mattingly’s office. A witness, who had seen and heard Laura Mattingly grab and scream at my child, called me, and I ran over, since I teach at the campus right next door. Upon my arrival, Laura Mattingly never introduced herself to me, as we had never met, but instead screamed at me to put my son down after I immediately picked him up and took him out of her office. She screamed at me, “When he walks through these doors, he’s no longer your son, but MY student!” Later, Laura Mattingly reprimanded the witness, saying, “How dare you notify the parent behind my back!” I notified Harmony Public Schools of what happened, and they did nothing. I went through multiple grievance processes, and they continue to condone Laura Mattingly’s abusive behavior. After school Friday, November 1, 2019 I was notified my Kindergarten son was suspended for 3 days starting Monday November 4 for an alleged incident that happened with a teacher’s aide, and for an alleged incident that took place in the cafeteria. I requested to hear from the aide about what happened, but I was told aides can’t answer emails. There was no complaint made by either a teacher or a student for the cafeteria incident and the reason for the suspension changed 3 times. I demanded to see the footage, and there was absolutely no evidence of my child doing anything wrong. In fact, footage clearly showed another student blocking my son from sitting down. This was pure retaliation for my complaint against Laura Mattingly. She influenced the so-called discipline committee to concoct a reason to suspend my Kindergartener so that she can use the excuse that it was the committee who suspended my child. She consistently reminds her staff that they are her at-will employees, and can be terminated with or without cause, at any time, for any reason, or no reason. A Texas law exists that prohibits schools from suspending students in third grade or any grades below, but Harmony Public Schools is claiming they don’t have to abide by that law since they are a charter school system. When my child was expected to return to school, Laura Mattingly, moved several offices around, to plant herself in front of my child’s Kindergarten classroom. Because Harmony Public Schools allowed Laura Mattingly to create a hostile environment for my child, I withdrew him from Harmony Science Academy-Katy, as he was not safe there. And when my child did not return to that school, she then moved her office upstairs instead, as he would no longer be there for Laura Mattingly to bully. It is crystal clear that she was going to continue her relentless harassment against my child. Ramazan Coskuner, area superintendent, did everything he could to prolong my grievances, first by asking me to send a written letter to him allowing him to speak to my attorney, even though it wasn’t necessary. This was merely a stall tactic. He, then, did not give me a timely hearing within the 10-day period, as outlined in Harmony Public Schools Board Policy. On top of that, he simply fabricated a filing date that was way after my true filing date. I attended Harmony Public Schools board meeting February 22, 2020, and I was denied all requests in my grievance. Laura Mattingly has no principal certification, and it shows. What has happened to my 5 year old child is absolutely criminal. Parents, beware, because if Harmony Public Schools has allowed this to happen to the child of a 9-year employee with a great work history, what might happen to your child? The superintendent and board of directors simply don’t care. If your child attends Harmony Public Schools, please be aware of their practices. There are laws created to protect children, but if a school system is openly saying that they don’t abide by those laws, anything goes. Anything can happen to your children, and Harmony Public Schools will not do a thing to help them.
