One of my favorite things to do at my monthly KID board meeting is to note how much money our awesome team has saved us lately. These savings, and the transparency around them, are a huge reason I love getting to be part of our local Kearns government, and why I'm a believer in public utilities! Here are June 2026 savings updates:
1. All KID vehicles are equipped with dash-cams and GPS tracking to ensure safe driving and job compliance (no unauthorized road trips with our money). KID switched from a 3rd party camera monitoring service and invested about $4K upfront for new cameras and memory cards for each vehicle. This will save $11K annually going forward! Plus, it will help resolve any expensive mischief from theft or false insurance claims.
2. By implementing a small gift card drawing for the safest drivers each month, the fleet has seen significant improvements in driver safety scores, and a reduction in driving incidents/damages. We don't have a total ROI for these changes, but it will certainly add up to savings in medical and vehicle insurance costs, plus keep our whole community safer.
3. Simple updates to our monthly billing system and after hours phone service are going to save us $55K annually!

That's the KID team looking out for our customers by saving over $85,000 dollars a year with some small adjustments!

A few notes from yesterday's Kearns Improvement District board meeting:

Good news costs: Our amazing Director of Operations shared how we will be saving around $10K a year after being trained how to make our own chlorine substitute (sodium hypochlorite) by an expert in the field, rather than spending money to purchase this from outside vendors as prices have increased substantially lately.

Bad news costs: To execute needed upgrades to our security and operations control room, we need to replace the computer servers a little ahead of schedule. 5 years ago this cost us about $20K. This year, due skyrocketing costs of servers (processor manufactures are under enormous strain thanks to AI data centers) the lowest bid, from a company we trust for this upgrade will be upward of $100K. A 5X increase! The upshot is we expect this upgrade to last 10 years.

Community Good news: We are all VERY excited about the first ever KID Running Toilet 5K happening before the Kearns Hometown Days parade. We are still looking for event sponsors and hope everyone will register to participate. I am planning to make a Golden Plunger Scepter for whoever wins the Golden Throne.

Water use mixed news: On the whole, water usage is slightly up over 2025, but when we look at usage by tier, those who are were already in the lowest use tier have been able to cut even more, and are down by 6%. I know from personal experience that by establishing my water-wise landscape over the last few years, I have been able to reduce my watering down to 2x a week this year, instead of 3X in the past. These small changes do make a difference. Thank you!

Just watched this interesting introduction to greywater irrigation, newly simplified for Utah homes. I’m hoping to do some bathroom remodeling in the next few years and I’ll be thinking about how I can make the absolute best use of the water I use in my home for my yard. Every drop counts! Slow the Flow
