Celebrating the Adirondack Fire Towers with the Labor Day Weekend Lighting. This year Hurricane will glow again, as will the reassembled tower at the Adirondack History Museum in Elizabethtown, less than 10 miles away.
Find your favorite spot to watch, and honor the observers who served up there all those decades to help preserve the Adirondack Forest Preserve.
The lights will be on from 8:30 to 9:30 Saturday, Sept. 30. (Rain date--same time Sunday.) More details: www.nysffl.org

No lighting of Hurricane Fire Tower tonight. Too stormy. We'll stay safe and see you next year.

FIRE TOWER LIGHTING IS SATURDAY, AUG. 31.
The 2024 ceremonial lighting of fire towers across the Adirondacks and Catskills is designed to celebrate the towers and honor the memory of the observers who watched over our forests from atop these spindly steel structures.
Volunteers will be climbing Hurricane early in the evening, and illuminating the scene from 9 to 9:30.
Hikers are welcome to climb the mountain to see the scene up close. There are also many good viewing locations on hills and along roadways in Keene and Elizabethtown. And in Elizabethtown itself, the retired tower attached to the Adirondack History Museum will also be lit up. That's a very easy climb.
Here's a photo of the Hurricane tower in 2022, with Elizabethtown in the background.

NEW SAFETY FENCING. Heavy-duty Hurricane weather took a toll on the safety wire installed back in 2015 when the tower was restored. (Rime ice and ferocious winds!) Yesterday we installed new, tougher wire on all four landings and increased the safety for hikers by a lot. Special thanks to Bob Hunter of the ADK Summit Steward volunteers and Friends of Hurricane Mt.

Trail work on the old Observer's Trail (or East Trail) up Hurricane. A couple of saws, an axe, and willing volunteers....what could be more fun. We can't vouch for conditions up above this point, but the two main trails -- from Rt. 9N and Crow Clearing -- are in quite good shape.

Trail work Saturday. Friends of Hurricane Mountain, clearing some major blowdown with Mary Jean Bland and Pam Gothner.

CAIRNS MAKE FOR CLARITY

Cairns along the trail or on summits are stacked rocks with a meaning or purpose. They are navigational, and mark the route of a trail. This could be to provide a directional route on the trail or to protect fragile vegetation and micro ecosystems.

The Adirondack Mountain Club has built cairns and modest rock barriers on many summits, including Hurricane's.

If you come across a cairn, please do not disturb it. Don’t knock it down, add to it or alter it. And please do not build unauthorized cairns. These can confuse other hikers, giving wrong directions or information.

Please leave the mountain and rocks as you found them. If you notice someone altering or damaging the cairn on the summit of Hurricane please let us know by emailing us at: [email protected]

SUMMIT STEWARDing on the big fall hiking weekend. The wind was COLD up there, and the rain swept in late. But at least 90 hikers climbed up Hurricane for those fantastic views and the restored tower. Two young women beat me up there, as they hiked up for the sunrise.
You, too, can volunteer for this "duty" with the Adirondack Mountain Club. But you'll have to wait til next year.
