WEEKLY COVID UPDATE

Over the last several weeks, Duplin County has experienced an increase in the number of positive COVID-19 cases. Currently, there are 311 individuals in isolation and 61 reported COVID-19 related deaths. The county’s contact tracing team has seen an increase in the number of positive cases following major holidays since the beginning of this national public health emergency.

With the upcoming holiday season, Duplin County Health Department is urging individuals to avoid traveling during Thanksgiving, and only gathering with their household as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) have jointly advised.

If you decide to travel or host a family or social gathering for Thanksgiving, follow the NCDHHS guidance when hosting or participating in any in-person gatherings. This is especially crucial if your gatherings include individuals over the age of 65 or who have underlying health conditions:

• The best way to reduce your risk of viral transmission is to limit travel during the holidays and limit physical contact with people who do not live in your household.

• Being related to someone does not mean you are immune from catching COVID-19 or other viruses from them. You should always practice the 3Ws and wear a face covering, keep 6 feet of social distancing, and wash your hands thoroughly—even when you are around family members.

• You should consider having a screening COVID-19 test prior to travel or attending family gatherings. If you do have a screening test, consider the following important information:
o A negative test only gives you information for that point in time. A negative test does not mean you will remain negative at any time point after that test.
o Screening tests may miss some infections, particularly if done using rapid or point of care tests.
o Even if you have a negative test, you should wear a mask, physically distance, avoid crowds and indoor crowded places, wash your hands frequently, monitor yourself for symptoms, and minimize contact with people at high risk of complications of COVID-19.

If you have been recently diagnosed with COVID-19, have symptoms of COVID-19, or have been around a person with COVID-19, then do not host or participate in any in-person gatherings until you complete your isolation or quarantine period.

The full Thanksgiving guidance from the NCDHHS:https://files.nc.gov/covid/documents/guidance/NCDHHS-Interim-Guidance-for-Thanksgiving.pdf

We can stop the spread of this virus from impacting those we love most, but it will require all of us to step up to the plate and do our part. On behalf of the Duplin County Health Department, we ask that you help to be an advocate of public health and encourage your family and friends to wear a face covering at Thanksgiving, follow the recommendations officials have issued, and stay home when you are sick.

The terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 left 343 New York firefighters dead. Retired FDNY Lieutenant James J. O’Donnell survived that horrific day but attended over 150 memorial services for those that passed. Now, he shares the lives of 10 heroes who perished in the attacks, as told by their parents in “Sons of Valor, Parents of Faith.” “The crashing of two planes into the Twin Towers not only dismantled the buildings but hundreds of families as well. Mothers and fathers were left in the rubble of these attacks, searching for husbands, brothers and sons. Some of them never received answers nor recovered the bodies,” O’Donnell said. “The parents’ spiritual and emotional journeys can serve as an example of faith rising over despair.” “Sons of Valor, Parents of Faith” serves as a memorial to the lives and careers of 10 first responders who perished on 9/11. O’Donnell presents a unique and personal look at how the parents of these heroes were consoled by the FDNY Counseling Services Unit and the role that they played in helping them manage their grief in the aftermath of a national tragedy. In their own words, these faithful families share their sons' bravery and sacrifice so that it will never be forgotten. These parents not only recount the lives of their children but their own road to healing. O’Donnell takes a special look at the role faith played in the lives of those that perished and their families. “Sons of Valor, Parents of Faith is meant to help readers understand the stress, hardship and sometimes devastation that parents and families of first responders face,” O’Donnell said. “I also hope that readers realize the efforts and sacrifices of the FDNY and their families. Not only on that day but in the ensuing months and years.” Available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Westbow Press.
