To make way for the Innerbelt in the late 1960s, city officials had been seizing property through eminent domain and offering a small amount of cash to homeowners for relocation purposes. The payouts, which frequently were contested by homeowners, were often not enough to purchase new homes.

The mistakes of the past are guiding discussions about the future of a 30-acre decommissioned stretch of the Innerbelt in the heart of Akron.

NAACP of Portage County president Dr. Geraldine Hayes Nelson and Ravenna activist Rev. Dennis Richey, Sr. released statements last night in response to the conviction of Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd.

Here is an opportunity to support the Portage County NAACP. With the increase in local anti-racist activism they need funds for:

-A Professional Grade Zoom account for the Portage County NAACP chapter
-Equipment and supplies for local peaceful protests, such as a megaphone, signs, and SWAG.
-Design and printing of materials for local Get Out the Vote efforts in the Black community

Any surplus funds will go to the NAACP chapter in Portage County for future initiatives in partnership with local collaborators.
