Children’s Program at Friendship Gardens

Hardin County – The Hardin County OSU Extension Master Gardener Volunteers are hosting a children’s program at the Friendship Gardens called “Leaf Rubbings, Scarecrows & Scavenger Hunts” on Saturday morning, September 24. This event is from 10:00 am until noon and will provide several activities for kids of all ages. Each child will be able to leave with a leaf rubbing and scarecrow that they made themselves with the help of the Master Gardener Volunteers. There are also garden scavenger hunts planned for the kids. The event will take place at the Friendship Gardens of Hardin County, which is located at 960 W. Kohler Street in Kenton.

Each child is asked to bring either an old button-down kid’s shirt, hat or maybe even both, to dress their scarecrow. Children of all ages are welcome with a responsible adult. The adult must remain with their children for the entire event. Wear old clothes as making scarecrows involves participants painting faces on their project. The event is free and open to the public with no registration necessary. Come enjoy fall activities in the garden! Questions about this event can be directed to the Hardin County OSU Extension Master Gardeners page or by calling the OSU Extension office at 419-674-2297.

Agriculture Hall of Fame Nominations Sought

Hardin County - Applications are being accepted for the 2022 Hardin County Agriculture Hall of Fame through the end of business on October 14. Nominees must have made their major contribution to agriculture primarily as a result of being born, growing up, living in, or working in Hardin County, Ohio. Outstanding agriculturalists may be nominated by individuals or organizations. Nomination forms are available at the Hardin County OSU Extension office or on the Hardin County OSU Extension website at hardin.osu.edu. Completed forms must be returned to the OSU Extension Office, 1021 W. Lima Street, Suite 103, Kenton, Ohio, 43326.

The purpose of the Hardin County Agriculture Hall of Fame is to recognize and honor outstanding contributions to agriculture by Hardin County people. Annual awards will be made to men or women who have been instrumental to the success and excellence of agriculture, either as a farmer or in an agricultural related field. We desire to honor and give public recognition to those who have brought distinction to themselves, have made outstanding contributions to their professions, and whose community involvement has served as a stimulus to others. Selected individuals who have been instrumental to the success and excellence of agriculture will be honored at the Agriculture Hall of Fame Awards Banquet, scheduled for Tuesday, December 6, 2022.

Carcass Show of Champions

Hardin County – Have you ever wondered how well the grand and reserve champion fair animals will grade out on the rail? The OSU Extension office is announcing that the 2022 Hardin County Fair Carcass Show of Champions will be held in-person at Jenkins Meats, 670 E. Marion Street, Mt. Victory on Monday, September 19 starting at 6:00 pm. Viewers will be also be able to watch the OSU Meat Judge giving oral reasons and results at both the Hardin County OSU Extension and Ohio State – Hardin County 4-H pages in addition to the hardin.osu.edu website after the event. The carcass show will evaluate the meat value of the grand champion and reserve champion steers, barrows, gilts, and lambs from this year’s Hardin County Fair.

Carcass value will be determined by evaluating the dressing percentage, yield grade (external fat thickness, ribeye area (in2), internal fat, and hot carcass weight), as well as quality grade (marbling score and skeletal maturity). Carcass information is very important to breeding livestock operations for making genetic improvements in their seed stock animals; and serves as an effective marketing tool for producers who sell their livestock for meat. The Hardin County Fair Carcass Show of Champions is sponsored by Ohio State University Extension, Jenkins Meats, the Hardin County Fair Board, the Hardin County Sheep Improvement Association, the Hardin County Cattle Producers, and the Hardin County Pork Producers.

Your crew is awesome! I was worried about my son's Electricity project not getting done with my very little understanding of it. Amanda answered my questions and concerns and made an appointment for me and my son to go over the book. We met Adam and spent time with him going over the fundamentals of electricity, he even helped Wyatt with making a open and closed circuit. Thank you so much! Just another reason to join 4-H!
Please remove if not acceptable! Had a friend tell me there may be some llama llovers here?! :) Let me know if you wold like a tote!

Attention Hardin County 4H Horse Members:

The Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) will be holding their Western Semi-Finals in Findlay, OH on June 2-3, 2018 at the University of Findlay Western Farm featuring 150+ Reining and Horsemanship IEA riders from across the US. This is a great opportunity to see what IEA has to offer. The IEA season is September - June for Hunt Seat and Western for riders in grades 6-12 and there are more than 12,000 riders nationwide who participate.

4H Clubs, barns and schools can easily start an IEA team - you only need 3 riders in either middle school or high school. It is a great way to give kids the opportunity to show year round. IEA uses a draw-based system and riders do not need to own a horse or tack as these are provided for every rider at every event. You can learn more at www.rideiea.org or by contacting Jenn Eaton at [email protected].

This event in June in Findlay is open to the public and there are vendor areas available for $50 - a great way to show off local businesses, barns, or 4H clubs. Contact IEA Western Administrator, Todd Knerr at [email protected] for more information on how to participate as a vendor or sponsor.
Where can I find the 4H fair schedule
Congrats Derek Courtad, Hardin Hi-Lighters - OUTSTANDING OF THE DAY with his gardening project!
Congratulations to Adeline Moore of the Hardin Hi-Lighters 4-H Club for a very successful day at the Ohio State Fair. For the fifth consecutive year, she placed 1st in her age division for the Dog Skillathon. She also was the overall Intermediate Division winner for the third consecutive year.

She and her little dog, Sam, earned a perfect score for the judging of You and Your Dog and were 2nd place out of 40 4-H youth.

We are so proud of you and your hard work!
Gold in agility for Hardin Hi-Lighter Adeline Moore and her dog Sam. Congrats.
