More exciting news! East Kentwood Jazz 1 was just named the Most Outstanding Band at the WMU Jazz Festival. Here’s the moment right before they took the stage to open the night concert.

EKHS Jazz 1 earned first place at the 53rd Annual CMU Jazz Festival, the largest jazz competition in the state!🥇

Additional awards:

🎺 Isaiah Gilliam – Best Soloist
🎶 Jazz 1 Trombones – Best Section
🥁 Jazz 1 Rhythm Section – 3rd Place Best Section

And it was a great day for EKHS Jazz 2 in class B:
🎶 Jazz 2 Trombones – 2nd Place Best Section
🎷 Aariq Williams – 3rd Place Best Soloist

It was a great weekend for East Kentwood HS Jazz! Yesterday, our Jazz 1 took the stage at the Michigan Music Conference and delivered a fantastic, high-energy performance.

To top it off, three of our students—Kian Bakri, Ben Young, and Isaiah Gilliam—stepped right back on stage to perform with the All-State Jazz Band immediately afterward.

Thank you to everyone in the Kentwood community who came out to support these talented students!

All State! 🎷🔥

Huge congratulations to Kian Bakri, Benjamin Young, and Isaiah Gilliam on making the MSBOA All State Jazz Band!

Ben and Isaiah were 2 of only 4 trombones selected statewide, and Kian earned 1 of just 2 tenor sax spots.

Catch their All State performance at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan 24 in the Ambassador Ballroom (Amway Grand Plaza) — right after East Kentwood Jazz 1 performs!

This Saturday is our Falcon Marching Invitational, where we’ll be hosting 25 bands from across the state. Gates open at 10:45 AM, and your Falcon Marching Band will perform last at 7:45 PM!

The 2025-26 Jazz season kicked off today at the Detroit Jazz Festival! 🏙️🎶

This was the first time in almost 30 years that East Kentwood has performed. With just a few summer sectionals, rehearsals, and one week of school, these students delivered a fantastic performance.

This is just the beginning of what’s shaping up to be a BIG year for East Kentwood Jazz, and we can’t wait to see what’s next!
