Reporter, Dorvall Bedford, of The Dickinson Press did a phenomenal job at reporting fairly and answering good questions in this Q&A interview.

I respect anyone willing to run in a Sheriff’s election. It takes sacrifice, courage, and a commitment to serve the community. While we may have different ideas and approaches, every candidate is giving their time and energy because they care about the future of this county. As one of the candidates myself, I want to recognize and appreciate that effort.

Day in my life:

Opening day! Golf season!

I was asked back in early March- ish (or probably January, Ha!) with the warm weather to go golf from the kiddos.

Now, finally, we were able too!! Opening day!

And for those that golf, the golf swing...ehh let's talk about the weather instead... Ha.

The weather was beautiful.

Vision Zero Partnered with coffee shops to encourage all to 💥BUCKLE UP💥. This time of year is unfortunately historically known for vehicle accidents and many are found to not be utilizing a seat belt. Extra enforcement begins soon for this very reason.

First event begins with our very own Killdeer coffee shop Bangin Beans!! May 5th from 8-10 a.m. everyone wearing their seat belts will receive $1 off their drink at Bangin Beans!

Some of you know me already, but for those who don’t, I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself as I begin my campaign for Sheriff.

I was born and raised in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan — what many people call a proud “Yooper.” After high school I moved to Minnesota, where I spent several years working as a production supervisor while also serving as a police reserve officer for over five years. In 2014, I began my full-time law enforcement career with the New Town Police Department in New Town, North Dakota. During my time there I worked my way up through the ranks from patrol officer to Sergeant, and eventually had the honor of serving as Chief of Police.

My family and I spent many weekends hunting in the Dunn County area over the years, and we eventually decided this was the place we wanted to call home. In 2019 I was hired by the Dunn County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy, and I currently serve as a Corporal in a supervisory role.

Throughout my career I’ve had the opportunity to serve in several different capacities, including Field Training Officer, and Field Training Supervisor, Reserve Officer Coordinator, ND DOT Grant Coordinator, fi****ms instructor, and Taser instructor for the past 10 years. I’ve also been certified as a Method of Instruction (MOI) instructor to teach general police subjects. In 2020 I was honored to receive a Lifesaving Award, and in 2021 an Education Award for my work in training and developing officers. I received the DUI Enforcement Deputy of the Year Award in 2022 with Dunn County Sheriff’s Office.

One of the more unexpected and fun moments in my career came when I helped make sure a Killdeer High School couple could attend their prom — something that ended up being featured by People Magazine, Insider Edition, and several local news outlets. It was a great reminder of how special small-town communities really are. And how we as law enforcement are no different than anyone else, we all need a helping hand every once in awhile.

My wife Hannah and I have been married since 2014, and together we’re raising our three kids — Wyatt, Mckenna, and Jett — here in Killdeer. Being part of this community means everything to us.

When I’m not working, you’ll usually find me spending time with my family, hunting, golfing, working on garage projects, or staying active with weightlifting and hockey. One of the highlights of the past year was being fortunate enough to tag a once-in-a-lifetime North Dakota bull elk.

I’m grateful to live and serve in this community, and I look forward to sharing more with you in the coming months as I continue this journey.
