Did you know that there are benefits to leaving the leaves that fall from trees onto your lawn? We encourage you to #leavetheleaves this fall!

The traditional method of raking and bagging fallen leaves actually causes more harm than good. Bagged leaves take up space in landfills, and produce greenhouse gasses as they break down. Consider leaving your leaves and mowing over them to break them down. As they break down, they'll fertilize your lawn naturally over the winter and spring!

There are plenty of ways to use the leaves on your lawn, check out this article from Clemson Extension for a list: https://hgic.clemson.edu/fall-leaves-to-leave-or-not-to-leave/

Have specific questions about leaf management for your lawn? Email or call the URI Gardening and Environmental Hotline: https://web.uri.edu/mastergardener/gardening-and-environmental-hotline/

Understanding Dental Plaque....and so much more!

Register now for Understadning Dental Health as You Age with Antonio Mattero. The class meets for 2 sessions at 9:30AM beginning November 29.

Everyone is susceptible to the detrimental effects of dental plaque. The bacteria in plaque are part of the normal oral flora, but, if left unchecked, can create a host of health problems. Dental plaque is connected with sugars and decay, periodontal disease, halitosis and dry mouth, and some systemic diseases. Images of oral disease will be shown as will common supermarket items whose labels will be scrutinized. The presentation will conclude with a pictorial display and discussion describing simple measures, dental devices, and over-the-counter dental products to aid in our controlling dental plaque buildup.

Check out Dr. Mattero’s video intro here: https://youtu.be/d3Mm-UXPh40

Adinkra in Translation begins Nov 2.

Looking for a creative class? Why not try Adinkra in Translation with Rachel Ansong! The Adinkra symbols are ancient ideographs from Ghana named after Akan proverbs. Each proverb has a corresponding philosophical and ethical cultural value for the Akan people. Adinkra symbols are widely used in the United States and reflect the many values of human community. Each week, participants will create a piece of personal art (poem, short story, art object, music, visual art, textile, etc.) in connection with a selected Adinkra symbol.

OLLI members enjoyed an afternoon The Coast Guard House enjoying the many flavors of Chenin Blanc. Wine director, Elisa introduced Chenin blanc as a White wine grape variety from the Loire Valley of France. Its high acidity means it can be used to make everything from sparkling wines to well-balanced dessert wines. Thank you so much Elisa!! There are still a few spots left in the December Wine Tasting class. Why not register? https://uriolli.augusoft.net/

As part of Rhode Island's efforts to mark the centennial of America's participation in World War I (1917 - 1919), the Rhode Island World War One Centennial Commission (RIWW1CC) in conjunction with the Rhode Island Historical Society (RIHS) will be hosting "Doughboy Roadshow", an event similar to a combined "Antiques Roadshow" and "Genealogy Roadshow." The event will be held from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm, Saturday, March 10, 2018, in the ballroom of the Aldrich House, 110 Benevolent Street, Providence, Rhode Island, 02906. This event is free and open to the public. The intent of the "Antiques Roadshow" element of the event is to introduce members of the public to experienced appraisers and subject matter experts who can help them correctly identify and appraise their World War I related militaria (excluding fi****ms), artifacts, documents, etc. The public will be asked to bring their World War I related items (excluding fi****ms) for identification and a free informal (non-binding) appraisal. The intent of the "Genealogy Roadshow" element of the event is to introduce members of the public to experienced genealogists and archivists who can help them with their research into the World War I veterans in their family tree. Members of the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS), Rhode Island Genealogical Society (RIGS), and American-French Genealogical Society (AFGS) will be on-hand to help answer questions related to the genealogical research into World War I veterans. The Connecticut State Library (CSL), through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), will be providing personnel and equipment to digitize relevant items. Please contact Matthew McCoy at [email protected] for further details.
