LUNCH AND LEARN —OLLI members toured the circa 1969 Smith Appleby House on Wednesday. This restored farmhouse features original cabinet work, stenciled walls and other interesting architectural details. The house is on the National Registry of Historic places and sits on 7 acres in Smithfield. After the tour, they enjoyed a hearth-cooked lunch of soups, breads, cheeses and a pumpkin dessert. Looks delicious!

Do you experience fall allergies? Many folks assume its due to the beautiful (and native) goldenrod plant, but it's actually most likely Ragweed (Ambrosia psilostachya) that is making you sneeze! Ragweed causes stuffy noses, sneezing and itchy eyes during the late summer and early fall.

One plant can release a billion grains into the air. Researchers have found ragweed pollen two miles up in the atmosphere and 400 miles out to sea. The allergy is worse when nights are cool, and days are warm and dry. Its season usually starts in early August and ends in mid-October (after a killing frost), although researchers are finding the season expanding due to climate change.

Thank you Alan Newton, URI Master Gardener class of 2020 for researching this topic and the providing information for this post.

Earlier this week OLLI members enjoyed a presentation by Larry Canepa @dinner8az on the spice trade in the age of exploration. Larry explained that the history of spice is in many ways the history of the world. Some food for thought when your next sit down to a steaming hot bowl of curry and nicely spiced cup of chai.

They learned about vegetable variety trials, prevention of bird damage to sweet corn, high tunnel vegetable production, cover crops for soil health, polycultures, and crops in urban community gardens for ethnic groups. Special thanks to Dr. Rebecca Brown for such a wonderful and informative tour!

The Pandemic

The OLLI "Photo Friday" Special Interest Group has been meeting via Zoom since the pandemic began. One of the first themes we photographed was "Signs of a Pandemic." Our fearless and talented leader (facilitator, instructor and member), Jan Armor collected the photos and encouraged the group to submit a short video with their thoughts on the pandemic. The result is this fabulous video, The Pandemic Through Our Photo Friday's Eyes (and Lenses). Enjoy!

Talked about in today’s RI Landmarks presentation
The Pacer was briefly talked about in some my Olli RI History presentations.....
As part of Rhode Island's efforts to mark the centennial of America's participation in World War I (1917 - 1919), the Rhode Island World War One Centennial Commission (RIWW1CC) in conjunction with the Rhode Island Historical Society (RIHS) will be hosting "Doughboy Roadshow", an event similar to a combined "Antiques Roadshow" and "Genealogy Roadshow." The event will be held from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm, Saturday, March 10, 2018, in the ballroom of the Aldrich House, 110 Benevolent Street, Providence, Rhode Island, 02906. This event is free and open to the public. The intent of the "Antiques Roadshow" element of the event is to introduce members of the public to experienced appraisers and subject matter experts who can help them correctly identify and appraise their World War I related militaria (excluding fi****ms), artifacts, documents, etc. The public will be asked to bring their World War I related items (excluding fi****ms) for identification and a free informal (non-binding) appraisal. The intent of the "Genealogy Roadshow" element of the event is to introduce members of the public to experienced genealogists and archivists who can help them with their research into the World War I veterans in their family tree. Members of the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS), Rhode Island Genealogical Society (RIGS), and American-French Genealogical Society (AFGS) will be on-hand to help answer questions related to the genealogical research into World War I veterans. The Connecticut State Library (CSL), through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), will be providing personnel and equipment to digitize relevant items. Please contact Matthew McCoy at [email protected] for further details.
