You still have time to get the mulch down. You can reuse your brown cardboard boxes in the garden. Flatten them, lay them down, and dump your mulch on the boxes for the perfect w**d block.

Keep in mind only brown cardboard boxes are suitable (white or colored boxes will introduce undesirable chemicals into the soil), and they must not be shiny (an indication of a plastic coating). All tape, labels, and staples should be removed before using cardboard boxes in the garden.

Don't have enough cardboard to cover your entire garden? You could also use newspapers or paper bags. Newspapers must be black and white only; don't use colored or glossy sheets. Paper bags must be brown and any ink on them should be black only.

Don’t forget mulch bags are trash!

🍌 🦴 In Ireland, organic waste must be separated. You can use a brown bin, compost at home, or bring waste to a civic amenity centre. Composting reduces emissions, is better for the environment and can even save you money!! Since 2024, bin collection companies must offer a brown bin service

✅ What can go in your brown bin or compost heap?

Cooked and uncooked fruit and vegetable waste

Coffee grounds and tea bags

Raw & Cooked food

Meat & Fish (not compost, yes brown bin)

⛔ Avoid composting:

Metal

Glass

Plastic

Not all plastics are accepted in recycling. The plastic items that DO belong in your recycling are bottles, jars, jugs, & tubs, plus clear plastic cups, clear plastic clamshells, and clear plastic egg cartons.

Consider reuse: if your unwanted item still has life in it, it can be donated or offered free in a local “Buy Nothing” Facebook group. Some thrift or consignment shops accept plastic hangers.

Remember:
• Empty liquids and remove food residue from all containers.
• Replace lids and caps, and recycle!
• Pumps go in the trash.
• Don’t bag recyclables – keep loose in your bin or cart.

When in doubt, use the Recyclopedia on our website: https://kingstonma.gov/367/Recycling-Disposal-Center

Not all plastics are accepted in recycling. The only plastic items that belong in your recycling bin are bottles, jars, jugs, & tubs, plus clear plastic cups, clear plastic clamshells, and clear plastic egg cartons.

Disposable plastic utensils, plates and kitchenware are not recyclable. Neither are colored or opaque plastic cups. In contrast, clear plastic cups and their attached lids ARE recyclable (printing on the cups is OK).

Consider donating your plastic kitchenware! If it’s in good shape, bring it to the Swap Shop open on Saturdays.
