A Tribute to a Storytelling Legend, Jane Yolen

The children’s book world has lost a true treasure. We are saddened to learn of the passing of Jane Yolen, who passed away at the age of 87 on June 11th, 2026.

Jane Yolen spent more than six decades inspiring readers of all ages. She wrote over 450 books, including beloved classics such as Owl Moon, How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight?, and The Devil’s Arithmetic. Her stories of imagination, wonder, history, nature, and kindness have touched generations of children and helped spark a lifelong love of reading.

As we celebrate our dinosaur-themed summer reading program this year, her passing feels especially meaningful. Jane Yolen brought dinosaurs to life for countless young readers through her beloved How Do Dinosaurs…? series, filling story times with laughter, imagination, and a love for these prehistoric creatures.

Here at the Kirwin City Library, we are grateful for the countless pages of joy and curiosity she gave to our young readers. Her words will continue to live on each time a child opens one of her books and discovers a new adventure.

Thank you, Jane Yolen, for the stories, the magic, and the memories for children, families, and many generations to come.

Rest in peace, and thank you for sharing your imagination with the world.
