Baylee's Wish

Baylee's Wish Baylee's Wish started as Baylee Nichols' 7th birthday wish to deliver tons of toys to the sick kids Her only chance of survival was a bone marrow transplant.

Baylee Nichols was diagnosed with JMML (Juvenile Myelomonocytic Leukemia) on September 25, 2008 at 13 months old. Her lifesaver ended up being her 4 year old brother, Brody. Baylee developed Graft vs Host Disease after transplant and was put into a coma for 5 weeks in multi-organ failure. Baylee is a fighter and a miracle and defied all odds when she woke up on the morning of December 31, 2008 and

pulled out her own breathing tube as if to say, "Cancer can't beat me!" Baylee is now in remission, healthy and vibrant, and excited to help other children fighting battles at Phoenix Children's Hospital. When Baylee was asked what she wanted for her 7th birthday, her reply was simple - to give toys to the children at Phoenix Children's Hospital. And so Baylee's Wish was created. Support began pouring in from all over the country from family, friends, and strangers who were touched by Brody's and Baylee's story. Baylee's Wish to deliver toys resulted in over 1,700 toys/items going to Phoenix Children's Hospital in just 38 days of collecting. Baylee's next wish is to keep the generosity going and continue to deliver happiness and smiles to sick children fighting health battles.

I remember the moment vividly, like it was yesterday instead of 10 years ago, June 2014. Baylee and I were standing in the kitchen at our old house and I asked her what she wanted for her 7th birthday coming up in August. She didn’t even stop to think before she said, “I have enough toys, Mommy. Let’s being toys to the kids at Phoenix Children’s.” And with that simple request from Baylee’s heart, the Baylee’s Wish Toy Drive was born.

Baylee, Dustin and I thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for every single donation, every prayer, those who went shopping with us, those who helped fundraise, those who helped with toy deliveries, those to jumped into the terrifying world of childhood cancer. We couldn’t have helped so many kids over the last 10 years without your love and support. We love you all so very much for being on this journey with us.

It’s been an incredible 10 years. Priceless memories of countless hours shopping with the kiddos, delivering toys to the little warriors at PCH and watching their faces light up, the fundraising and planning and strategizing. And all of this led by my sweet miracle girl. All of the recognition and praise goes to Baylee for starting this beautiful project and for keeping it going for 10 wonderful years. Every year I asked her if she wanted to do it, because I never wanted her to feel forced or that she didn’t have a voice. And that’s why Dustin and I honor and respect her decision to step away and close this chapter. We are beyond proud of you, Baylee Grace, for your desire to help other children and your selflessness. Don’t ever give up on the power of hope, baby girl. And don’t ever stop believing in miracles, because you are living proof that miracles happen. We love you.

Sooooo, we did some damage at Walmart last night and had SO much fun!!
So many people stopped us and asked what we were doing, so of course we shared Baylee’s story. One couple donated $25 right in the checkout line! We met a dad who’s daughter had a liver transplant at PCH the same time Baylee was fighting her battle. I thought the cashier was going to cry as he rang us up. 279 items for $2,144.89! And we’re NOT DONE!!! We have more funds in the Baylee’s Wish account and 2.5 weeks before the delivery. Let’s show these kiddos and their families so much love from this community! Please continue to donate. Every dollar helps! Instead of seeing 279 toys, imagine 279 kids battling cancer. Each toy brings a smile and a distraction to these little warriors. Please help us to shine a little light in the darkness.

And it begins!!!

JUST CONFIRMED OUR TOY DELIVERY DATE WITH PHOENIX CHILDREN’S FOR AUGUST 2nd!!!!! Message me for details if you want to go toy shopping with us tomorrow afternoon! It’s so much fun to shop for these kiddos and imagine their faces when they get toys to play with and distract them from their battle. I still remember how Baylee would perk up when the nurses would bring her something new to play with, no matter how bad she felt. And I remember how thankful I was to get to see her little face light up, and we would play together until she needed to rest. I never understood Play Therapy until I had to live it. Toys may seem trivial, but you are making a difference to kids who are fighting for their lives. Every donation helps. As a mom who’s been on the receiving end, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. (I’m not crying, someone’s chopping onions)
