89 homes. The tree line off Sanders Road. The City Council vote in July drew enough pushback to get postponed, then it passed unanimously two weeks later at an August work session.

The trees are why a lot of us are here. It’s why I’m raising my kids here—the canopy, the creeks, land that took a century to look like this. A tree line that old doesn’t grow back on our timeline. Once it’s gone, no vote brings it back.

When I’m on the commission—the county, not the city that made this call—no rezoning reaches a vote until the board sees the same accounting on every one: roads, schools, water and sewer, stormwater, tree canopy, emergency response, connectivity, and what ten years of that growth costs us to serve against what it brings in. Canopy and watersheds written into the conditions, before the silt reaches the cove. A public calendar and a real way to follow a case, so no one finds out from a sign in a ditch. In writing, every time.

I can’t undo the city’s vote. What I’ll require the day I have a seat, I’ll put in writing and hand you the receipts to hold me to it. That’s why I’m running—to be the person at that table fighting to keep what made you move here.

Some of these seats go unchallenged, and the same people keep making the same calls. You can’t grieve what we’re losing and keep sending the same people back to approve it—or stay home when someone finally runs to protect it. I’m running so there’s a real choice this time. Let’s raise the bar.

I wrote that I’d made my peace with standing on that sidewalk alone.

I wasn’t alone. Somewhere around two dozen neighbors showed up on almost no notice, candles in hand, for a vigil we put together in about a day, to stand with immigrant families being torn apart by ICE.

And the street answered. People honked and waved, fist pumped from their windows, cheered from their cars. A woman rolled down her window just to say thank you. One guy yelled something ugly—exactly one, all night.

They love to tell you this is the Forsyth of 1912. The loudest voices always assume they speak for the rest of us. Tonight proved they don’t.

To every immigrant family in this county: you are safe, you are wanted, and you are not standing alone.

We’re 102 days away from the midterms. A blue wave is coming—can you see it? 🌊
