**********SEVERE FLOODING************

Several roads in the county have standing water or flowing water on them. Most of these roads are on the East side of the county. The rain is continuing to fall and we have exhausted our supply of high water signs. PLEASE use extreme caution while out driving on the county roads.

The roads are not visible under flood waters, therefore you cannot determine how deep the water is, how fast the water is flowing, or even if the road has washed out under the water!

BE AWARE, TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN!!!

It's that time again!

In Kokomo and surrounding Howard County, "blind intersections" created by tall corn reaching 5 to 12 feet are a major seasonal hazard. Because corn is frequently planted right up to property lines, drivers approaching rural, two-way, and four-way county road intersections are advised to treat them with extreme caution.

Key Safety Practices at Blind Intersections:
Come to a Complete Stop: Do not roll through stop signs or uncontrolled intersections.
Inch Forward Slowly: Creep your vehicle forward past the edge of the corn stalks so you can safely view cross-traffic before proceeding.
Avoid Distractions: Turn down your radio and listen for oncoming engines, trucks, or farm equipment.
Expect the Unexpected: Tractors, farm implements, and local vehicles may not yield correctly or may be traveling at higher speeds.

Reporting Hazards: If an intersection is dangerously obstructed due to corn or weeds, county right-of-way codes require that the triangular area extending 20 feet in each direction from the corner be kept clear. You can report dangerous intersections to the Howard County Highway Department at 765-456-2802 so that they can contact the property owner or mow the roadside ditch. We will need to know the two intersecting roads and which corner/s.

Alternating lane closures planned on U.S. 31 in Kokomo

HOWARD COUNTY, Ind. — The Indiana Department of Transportation announces alternating lane closures are planned next month on U.S. 31 for concrete patching in Kokomo.

Alternating lane closures will begin on or after Monday, July 6 on northbound and southbound U.S. 31 between County Road 600 N. and State Road 18. Work is expected to continue through the end of August.

Crews began concrete repairs on U.S. 31 in Kokomo last summer, reopening the road in the late fall. The remaining work will be performed this summer under alternating lane closures to minimize the impacts to traffic.

INDOT reminds drivers to slow down, avoid distractions, and use extra caution while traveling in and around work zones. All work is weather-dependent, and schedules are subject to change.

As grass cutting moves into full swing for the season, please be mindful of motorcycles, bicycles, scooters, and the like. Grass on the roadways can turn a leisurely ride into an emergency in a moment. Let’s look out for each other and have a safe summer!

What seems to be "just grass," is a HAZARD to riders. Please be mindful.
