Earlier in August, Chairman Keevama and Chief of Staff traveled to Santa Fe, New Mexico, to attend the Coalition of Large Tribes (C**T) Annual Meeting. While in Santa Fe, they had the opportunity to visit Santa Fe Indian School (SFIS) and connect with members of the Hopi community who are part of the SFIS family.

During the visit, they met with Hopi staff representing a variety of areas across the school, including residential life, nursing, administration, facilities, and academics. These conversations provided an opportunity to learn more about the important roles our Hopi people hold within the school and the contributions they make to the success and well-being of SFIS students.

Chairman Keevama and Chief of Staff also had the opportunity to meet with Superintendent Christy Abeyta to gain a deeper understanding of the structure, programs, and operations of Santa Fe Indian School. The visit provided valuable insight into the school’s continued commitment to Native education, leadership, culture, and student success.
Yesterday evening, Chairman Keevama and the Hopi Tribe’s Public Information Officer (PIO), a proud SFIS alumna, returned to Santa Fe Indian School for a special celebration honoring 50 years of SFIS.

The reception brought together former staff members, Board of Trustees members, superintendents, governors, and, most importantly, SFIS alumni who have carried the school’s teachings, experiences, and relationships with them throughout their lives.

Fifty years represents more than a milestone. It represents generations of Native students, educators, staff, families, leaders, and communities who have contributed to the legacy of Santa Fe Indian School. It is a celebration of the people who built the foundation, those who continue the work today, and the alumni who carry that legacy forward.
For the Hopi Tribe, these connections are especially meaningful.

Our Hopi staff, students, alumni, and families continue to be an important part of the SFIS community. As we look toward the future, the Office of the Chairman and Vice Chairman remains committed to strengthening relationships, supporting our Hopi people, and creating opportunities that benefit our youth and future generations.

Chairman Keevama and staff spent Wednesday, September 2, at NAU Center for Native American and Indigenous Futures, Office of Native American and Indigenous Advancement, the Office of Indigenous Student Success, and NAU President José Cruz-Rivera.

We also had the pleasure of meeting with several Hopi students over lunch. This provided a valuable opportunity to hear directly from our students about their educational experiences, the challenges they may face, and the ways we can work together to strengthen the support, resources, and opportunities available to them.

Building strong partnerships with institutions such as NAU is an important part of creating pathways and ensuring our students know they have a community standing behind them.

We appreciated President Cruz-Rivera and the NAU team for welcoming us and for their continued commitment to Native and Indigenous students. Most importantly, I appreciate the Hopi students who took the time to share their experiences and perspectives with us. Their voices are essential as we look toward strengthening educational opportunities for our youth.

We look forward to continuing this partnership and these important conversations for the benefit of our Hopi students, families, and future generations.

⚠️ROAD CONSTRUCTION REMINDER⚠️

The Hopi Department of Transportation (HDOT) will begin Project No. HIR-2 (12) Katsina Point Road on August 31, 2026. This project will begin from Katsina Point (Hopi/Navajo Boundary) to Kykotsmovi, a total of 23 miles. There will be one lane open which will cause delays, therefore, please allow yourself extra time for traveling. Or you may use alternative routes to Flagstaff.

Hopi Tribe - DPSES kindly asks motorists to drive slowly and obey all traffic laws and construction signs.
