Today is about as big of a day as they get for our Chestnut Apartments!!! THANK YOU to Fowler State Bank for committing to fund the construction through completion! It has been a long journey to get here but the light at the end of the tunnel burns bright! We appreciate Jonathan Fox and his team’s commitment to local projects and supporting growth in our community. Onward!

Building local means buying local.

At Chestnut Apartments, this project has never just been about restoring a building. It is about reinvesting in La Junta — in our downtown, our workforce, our local businesses, and the people who keep projects like this moving.

Research on the “local multiplier effect” shows that money spent with locally owned businesses recirculates through the local economy at a much higher rate than money spent with non-local companies. The American Independent Business Alliance reports that, on average, 48% of each purchase at local independent businesses is recirculated locally, compared to less than 14% at chain stores. AMIBA also notes that local dollars can recirculate 2–4 times more than money spent with non-local companies.

That matters.

When we hire a local plumber, work with a local bank, buy supplies locally, or bring in a local craftsperson, those dollars do not just leave the project budget — they help support families, jobs, schools, nonprofits, the tax base, and the next local business down the line.

This month, we’ll be highlighting some of the organizations, people, and businesses helping bring the Chestnut Apartment back to life.

Historic Property Spotlight: 322 Santa Fe Avenue / Chestnut Apartments

The Chestnut Apartment Building at 322 Santa Fe Avenue has been part of La Junta’s story for more than a century. The building was completed in 1908 and has operated over time as either a lodging house or an apartment building. It as a two-story apartment building with red pressed brick, sandstone trim, raised basement windows, and a distinctive porch facing Santa Fe Avenue.

One of the things we love about this building is that it reflects La Junta’s growth during an important period in the town’s development. The historic designation application notes that the building is locally significant for its role in the development of the city as an important stop for the railroad and as an example of early twentieth-century architecture.

Buildings like this remind us that housing has always been part of downtown life. Preserving them is not just about saving architecture — it is about keeping historic buildings active, useful, and connected to the future of La Junta.
