DHS announced today that it has secured approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service on its April 17th request to expedite the expansion of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to online grocery purchases, curbside pickup, and delivery for food-insecure Marylanders — starting May 27, 2020. DHS has secured commitments from several major online retailers that are approved by the USDA, to ensure online SNAP becomes available to Marylanders as soon as possible and at no additional cost. Today, DHS joined the Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention, Youth, and Victim Services and The Maryland Children's Alliance in announcing the release of a public service announcement (PSA) to bring attention to what Marylanders can do to reduce the risk of, and intervene in, suspected incidents of child abuse and neglect.

“In times of crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic, our Child Protective Services workers across Maryland remain on the frontlines — helping to keep kids safe,” said Maryland Department of Human Services Secretary Lourdes R. Padilla. “We rely on communities to help alert us to situations where there might be abuse or neglect so that we can take immediate action. It is the responsibility of each of us as Marylanders to ensure a safe environment for all to thrive.”

Charles County Department of Social Services held its first "DSS Career Day" with 28 students from the College of Southern Maryland majoring in human services, social sciences, psychology, and members of the College's Latino Club. Career Development staff from Charles County Public Schools also attended in preparation for future career days with high school students.

Soon to be a monthly event, DSS Career Day educates youth and young adults on services the agency provides and is an opportunity to build a volunteer base and future work force. Director Wolf, Assistant Directors, and the FIA Program Manager spoke with students about their career interests, how to apply for jobs at the agency, and invited them to consider applying to be on the agency's Advisory Board! A special thanks goes out to Outreach Coordinator John Lewis for his help in facilitating this event. #teamMDserve
